WORKS FOR HANDICAP RACE Pontchartrain Feature of Saturdays Program at Fair Grounds. Spanish Play, Playtime, Bargello, Jimmy Moran, Surf Board and Camp Douglas in Training Moves. NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 28 Spanish Play and Playtime set the pace as probable starters for the ,000 added Portchartrain Handicap, the Saturday Fair Grounds Stake feature, when they went through important preparatory moves for that one mile and a sixteenth race over a heavy track at the Louisiana Jockey Club course this morning. Spanish Play, winner of the Inaugural Handicap on the opening day of the meeting and the outstanding performer here last winter, had his final workout for the Pontchartrain when he went a mile in 1:45 handily, and Playtime matched that trial to the very fraction of a second. Others of the likely starters seen-in brisk training this morning included Bargello, Jimmy Moran, Camp Douglas, Gettin Even, Springsteel, Surf Board and Who Win, and such others as Glastonbury, Wotan, Broad Meadows and Prose and Poetry were indulged with lighter work. Bargello and Jimmy Moran galloped a mile each in 1:46 handily, while Camp Douglas was caught in the same time in a workout at the same distance, and Who Win went eight furlongs in 1:46 under a hard drive. Gettin Even went a mile in ll:48 handily with Surf Board going three-quarters in 1:19 handily, and Springsteel three-quarters in 1:22 breezing. With practically all of the outstanding performers among the twenty-seven eligibles scheduled to start, the renewal of the Pontchartrain, almost under any conditions, should provide one of the most interesting races of the winter. With fast or good footing prevailing, the starters may number as many as fourteen and as many as ten are expected to answer the call to the post if the track is muddy or heavy. Spanish Play, winner of approximately 0,000 for Knebelkamp and Morris last year, will carry top weight of 120 pounds, four more than Bargello, the C. V. Whitney handicap star, is asked to carry. M. Goldblatts Jimmy Moran, champion older racer here last year and successful in his first engagement of the year at the Fair Grounds Monday, is in at 113 pounds, and the Greentree Stables Surf Board, second to Spanish Play in the Inaugural Handicap, will carry 110 pounds. Glastonbury, R. A. Fairbairns good son of Sir Gallahad III., which won so impressively at the Fair Grounds Tuesday, will shoulder 108 pounds and Edward Haughtons Wotan, the star and leading money winner of the recent Jefferson Park meeting, must carry an impost of 107 pounds in Saturdays race. Of the numerous three-year-olds among the nominees, J. J. Coughlins Camp Douglas, a confirmed fancier of soft footing and Continued on twenty-second rige. He is in the Pontchartrain with 99 pounds, one less than S. W. Labrots capable Spring-steel, second to Lucky Tom in the Jefferson Derby. If track conditions suit, Camp Douglas will race with the older cracks in the Pontchartrain, according to trainer R. E. Hefferan, and trainer Wm. Irvine is seriously considering starting Springsteel. Lucky Tom, entered for the Pontchartrain and breezed one mile at the Fair Grounds Monday, is in good condition for such a race as the Pontchartrain and trainer H. C. Riddle may elect to start him. Lucky Tom is top weighted among the three-year-olds with 107 pounds. Other eligibles for Saturdays race include: Bar Hunter, Black Fool, Crystal Prince, Etonardo, Frumper, Gaillardia, Light Mint, Mine Sweeper, Nellie Custis, Prince Atheling, Quatre Bras IX, Real Pardner and Sandwrack. .
