SANDWRACK CONSISTENT . Januska Star Outfinishes Favorite M Habanero in Feature Race. Favorites Have Good Day at Fair Grounds Bide a Wee Best in Second Race. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 5. The con-- sistent Sandwrack, which races for G. Januska, accounted for the Algiers Purse, exclusively for three-year-olds, and the outstanding race on a better than average Fri-"day program at the Fair Grounds here today. Habanero, favorite, finished second, and Skidmore, which began in a tangle, got tip for third before Louis Merryman. The "victor and Quando, both trained by F. P. Letellier, local horseman, were coupled in the betting. Although Sandwrack, ridden by James McCoy, defeated Habanero by a length and one-half and in the unimpressive time of 1:41 for the mile, the contest was an interesting one, yet for the spectacular it was outstripped by several of the contests that developed in the races that preceded it. Favorites, too, came back with a vengeance, and the sport proved worthy of the patronage of the increased throng of enthusiasts that attended. LUCKY AT START. Lucky at the start, which was a ragged one in which Skidmore was the chief sufferer, Sandwrack raced into the first turn among the leaders but after three-sixteenths was taken in hand as La Compere and Pietro showed the way. After reaching the final half mile, where La Compere and Pietro tired badly, Sandwrack moved into command with a rush and held Habanero, jwhich rapidly improved his position on the second turn, safe in the last three-sixteenths. Improving his position steadily, Skidmore raced past La Compere, Pietro and The -Whig on the stretch turn and outstayed Louis Merryman for third. The victory of Sandwrack marked his first of the meeting. Epona, a speedy daughter of Rustic and -fTearful, racing for the Chicago-owned Rainbow Stock Farm Stable, was a decisive winner of the opening race, for maiden juveniles, under claiming conditions. Running the three-eighths in :35, the fastest time of the meeting, Epona won by three lengths from Harold Jr., favorite, and Capt. Jerry, strong second choice, finished third, leading eight others. Those who supported the winner received odds of 4.20 for . HAROLD JR. IMPEDED. The winner was ridden by F. Burley and saddled by J. Butler. From a fast start she raced into the turn on oven terms with Harold Jr., which she appeared to impede before drawing clear, and the easy manner in which she scored left Harold Jr. little room for excuse in the interference he encountered. Capt. Jerry turned in an evenly balanced effort, and the performance of Gloritone, Catwalk and Chantesuta were creditable. Another purse was added to the coffers of the Edward Haughton stable when Bide a Wee, a big favorite and ridden by Elston, accounted for the second race, at one mile and an eighth. The Haughton filly failed to get away with the victory in decisive fashion when Florence Dolan came through with unsuspected contention, and only a half length separated the two at the finish. The .veteran Herendeen took the minor honors from Vagabond, which like Sun Thorn, the early leader, tired in the final drive. News of the death, at Cincinnati, of Col. Alex. Labold, was received -here with great borrow by his numerous friends among the horsemen, racing officials and racing fraternity in general. Jockey Robert Finnerty, local boy, arrived jthis morning and will ride free lance. He came from Miami where he rode at Tropical Park and Hialeah Park for the J?. A. Car-reaud stable. Gould Dietz, president of the Old Omaha Jockey Club, and his family, arrived this morning from Omaha and will make a two .weeks stay. Henry T. Batcheler, veteran turfman, who developed the crack My Dandy and other racers, came in this morning from his home at Dallas and will remain for the season. Two jockeys were suspended by the stewards Thursday. W. Garner and P. Garitty Brew suspensions of five days each. - Jockey R. Tilden has been released from engagements by the Southland Stable and jyill ride free lance
