DEMPSEY MEMORIAL HANDICAP ATTRACTS STARS FAIR GROUNDS FEATURE Spanish Play, Lucky Tom, Wotan and Surf Board Eligible. Track Conditions for Race Uncertain Brilliant Attractions Scheduled Probable Field. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 19. Although a dull track is almost certain to prevail for the running and may result in the withdrawal of some of the fourteen named through the entry box today, the third renewal of the Jack L. Dempsey Memorial Handicap, heading tomorrows program of the Louisiana Jockey Club at the Fair Grounds, presents one of the outstanding features of the meeting. At one mile, it will test Knebelkamp and Morris Spanish Play, Edward Haughtons Wotan, E. R. Bradleys Broad Meadows, Mrs. M. B. Pierces Silverdale, R. A. Fairbairns Glastonbury, John Marschs Prince Atheling, Mrs. Payne Whitneys Surf Board, Charles Bacharachs Playtime and others that may include J. J. Robinsons Lucky Tom, champion three-year-old of the winter. Spanish Play, which showed a return to top form when he defeated Playtime and others at one mile in his last start, will carry top weight of 120 pounds, and Silver-dale, recent winner of the Edgewater Gulf Hotel Claiming Sweepstakes, will carry 117 pounds. Wotan, most successful and consistent winner among the handicap racers here this season, will carry 114 pounds in his endeavor to add this fixture to his list, and the younger Lucky Tom gets in with 110 pounds. The race, named in honor of the memory of the late turf critic and correspondent, who made New Orleans his home, is the next to final feature on the Fair Grounds program for three-year-olds and over, and following its decision only the New Orleans Handicap will remain as a medium through which the best may be brought under colors. The Henry Clay Purse, over six furlongs, for older sprinters, and the St. Charles Hotel Trophy, for three-year-olds, are the best of the s,ix other events on the Dempsey Memorial program.
