SPECTACULAR FINISH IN TROPICAL PARK FEATURE i i ULUM WINS BY A NECK Waterway and Full Dress Lapped on Winner at End. - Big Crowd Witnesses Opening Day Program of Second Meeting at Beautiful Miami Course. MIAMI, Fla., Feb. 29 Uluniu, the old gelding from Hawaii, which races for Mrs. R. Pollard, in a thrilling finish was winner of the Gables Handicap at Tropical Park this afternoon. It was the opening feature of the second meeting of the Gables Racing Association, and it was indeed a brilliant opening with both club house enclosure and the spacious stand filled to capacity. Weather conditions could not have been improved on and, while most of the races were for selling platers, the fields were well matched and the sport worthy of the big opening. In the Gables Handicap, which was over the mile route, Frank Grossmans Waterway gave Uluniu a stern battle to the final stride, while T. Sullivans Full Dress, after forcing all the pace, was beaten a matter of inches for second place, while Lady Broadcast, the R. M. Eastman starter, finished a close fourth. Lady Broadcast was sent away from a position outside the stalls, and she was last to leave the starting post. The winner be-- . gan in front, but Montgomery sent Full Dress into the lead in the short run to the first turn and Rip Van Winkle was right at his throatlatch, with Uluniu just showing the way to Thais, which was carried a bit wide on the turn. Waterway followed the Whitney filly, and Lady Broadcast was the only other starter. IN CLOSE ALIGNMENT. On the back stretch Montgomery permitted Full Dress to race along at a pace that saw him a length in front, and then came Uluniu, Rip Van Winkle and Thais, all in close alignment, with the Whitney filly on the outside of the lot and, accordingly, forced to race a greater distance. Waterway was still within striking distance, and as Lady Broadcast began to make up ground, the entire field was in close order. Mills made his move with Thais going to the stretch turn, and for a few strides the filly showed in second place, but she was still so kr out on the course that she was compelle to travel a much greater distance than the others, and she could not hold that position. Then it was that Hanford called on Uluniu, and in a hard drive the old son of Rodgers gradually wore down Full Dress until a few strides from the finish he had Full Dress headed and battling along gamely, and his margin at the end was a neck. In the meantime Waterway was racing along gallantly and in the final strides he had dropped his nose down before Full Dress to take second place by a nose. With these three topped as they swept past the line, Lady Broadcast was only a length and a half back in fourth place. Both Rip Van Winkle and Thais had quit badly in the run through the stretch. MILLS IN LIMELIGHT. Hank Mills began his day well when he was pilot of Mrs. C. Garrigans Light Nun, which was winner over a cheap baud in a six furlongs dash. C. A. Bidencopes Estin was a fast-finishing second, and W. Hin-phys Timour. saved third from L. L. Lycans Sour Mash by a narrow margin. From a good start, Jaipur was first to show out of the bunch, but he almost at once gave way to Light Nun and once Mills had the daughter of Barrington in command he hustled her along to such good advantage that she was never afterwards headed. Jaipur and Backfire followed the filly, and Timour and Dedicate were back of these with Timour in close quarters and enjoying scant racing room. It was going to the turn out of the back stretch that Dedicate moved up threateningly, but he tired and dropped back, while Timour ran into trouble when he was called on for his move. In the meantime, Estin, slow to begin, was steadily making up ground. In the stretch Light Nun was forced to her best to save Continued on second page. Dedicate quit badly in the stretch. Mills made his score two in a row when he brought Mrs. L. V. Bellews Hieover home " winner of the second, another six furlongs dash. In this is was J. Riches Miss Avon-dale, one that sold in the field that raced into second place, and J. T. Irelands Merry Windsor saved third by a narrow margin from G. Crawfords Nonana. The start was a good one, and Merry Windsor was more alert than the others in the big company to take an instant lead with Nonana chasing after her and Miss Avondale racing third. Hieover was not as alert as the others, but Mills wisely permitted him to settle into his stride when he moved up on the inside and, leaving the back stretch, it was apparent he would be a close contender in the stretch. In the meantime, Nonana had passed Merry Windsor to take command and at the same time Miss Avondale came into contention. In the stretch Hieover finished with a rush to be the winner by a length and a half while the next three, Miss Avondale, Merry Windsor and Nonana, were only heads apart in the order named.
