: 3 WORKING OUT AT TANFORAN More Than Three Hundred Horses in Winter Colony at San Bruno Course. SAN BRUNO, Calif., Feb. 29. Winners of stakes and handicaps are galloping at Tanforan in preparation for the opening of the spring meeting Thursday, March 31. More than three hundred thoroughbreds "boarded" at the course throughout the winter and before long fast work will be in order. The trainers at Tanforan are filled with the ambition to repel the "invaders" when they come in from the South and East. It may be some of the horses that have been campaigned the last few months are in need of a rest and that will help the local contingent in scoring in the features that have been announced by the Pacific Coast Breeders Association. There are two bugaboos for the close observer of training gallops and events under colors. "Staling off" is not uncommon among the runners winning races, and on the other hand, horses being brought up to a hard tussle may be a bit "short." Watchers of "workouts" must be careful in noting the physical condition of a horse when he pulls up as well as the time of the gallop. Deception often comes when a three-quarter fit animal reels off a "work" in better than average time. It must be kept in mind that, as a general thing, the horse that is only three parts well will work more freely than one in tip top condition. Lamp Black, Wirt G. Bowman, Morpheus, Nifty, Chazzan, Givanna, Hey Diddle Diddle, Coalizer, Ante Bellum and scores of others of class are on the training inside course at Tanforan these mornings. The plan to have the gallopers right at the height of their form at the beginning of "hostilities" the last day of next month, probably will not miscarry, as all the good ones are being trained by past masters. Late closing of the six stakes of the spring meeting promises to bring out the best fields in the history of the Tanforan track. The features will be open for nominations seven days prior to the running of each stake.
