STAR RIDERS FOR H0MEW00D % James and Elston to Be Rivals — Pupils of Goose. ♦ Fifteen Carloads of Horses Due at Washington Park Saturday— High Class Racing Assured. ♦— — Washington Park, opening next Monday for a season of thirty days, promises to attract many capable riders, a greater number perhaps, than have in recent years been available for Chicago turf sport. Among the number in early action will be Gilbert Elston, C. Corbett, C. E. Allen, H. Fisher, W. Fronk, W. Garner, C. Meyer, M. Rose. C. Landolt, L. McDermott, Eddie Ambrose, R. Simpson, R. Fischer, J. Haupt, C. King, D. Cox, J. Leyland, J. McCoy, T. Reno, R. Jones, J. Neel, J. Boucher, D. Smith, R. De Prema, J. Redding, R. Tilden, R. Yelton. O. Clelland, J. Gilbert, J. McLaren, A. Colvin, M. Dupuy, W. Privett, C. Stran-ski, W. Taylor, P. Remillard, R. Reeves, L. Dye, M. Wimmer and others. In the running of those stakes in which eastern horses are eligible there will be jockey recruits from New York. An early arrival will be E. James, under contract to Col. E. R. Bradley, pilot of Burgoo King in his Kentucky Derby and Preakness triumphs. James will ride Burgoo King in the American Derby June 18. It is the belief of turfmen that Elston and James will continue to ride in sensational fashion this year. Elston lost his apprentice allowance last Saturday. It looks as if this five-pound advantage made no real difference. Last Wednesday he scored at Churchill Downs after the fashion of a seasoned rider. K. Russell, Cabama, Beauty Secret and Prince Megan were the horses with which he scored. Elston had to bat his way home. In two instances he got up in the final stride. A year ago Elston knew nothing about horses, but he had grown weary of running an elevator in a hotel at Helena, Mont. He followed this calling in order to provide for his mother. His ambition to become a jockey was recalled by a friend of the family who interceded in behalf of the youth with Johnson N. Camden, former U. S. Senator from Kentucky. •
