EQUIPOISE TRULY GREAT ♦ Whitney Star Scores Brilliant Victory in Historic Metropolitan. ♦ Sun Meadow Second and Mate Third — Arc Light Wins Appleton Memorial Steeplechase. ♦ NEW YORK, N. Y., May 21.— Equipoise, the magnificent son of Pennant and Swinging, carried the silks of C. V. Whitney to a glorious victory in the old Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park today before the largest crowd that has graced the big Nassau County course this season. Unbeaten in his three starts this year, and with the Harford and the Toboggan Handicaps already to his credit, this wonderful four-year-old reached true greatness in the Metropolitan and it is doubtful if a better horse was ever crowned its winner. Well back of Equipoise at the finish came Mrs. K. E. Hitts Sun Meadow and it was A. C. Bostwicks Mate, the top weight of the field, that was rather a distant third, easily beating Andy Schuttingers Pilate for that part of the prize. Following these were Osculator, Epithet and Ironclad, completing the field of seven that raced. The Metropolitan makes any racing day one of first importance, but on the same card there was the Charles L. Appleton Memorial Steeplechase that saw the Joseph E. Widener silks first and second when Arc Light was winner because his stablemate, Azucar, was almost pulled double to have him win. Back of them came Beacon Hill, winner of the International Steeplechase the opening day of the meeting. C. V. Whitneys great filly, Top Flight, which came back so brilliantly in the running of the Acorn Stakes, is progressing towards the Coaching Club American Oaks nicely. Trainer Healey had the daughter of Dis Done and Flyatit on the track at Belmont Park Saturday morning, and she was permitted to breeze along for an easy mile in 1:44. -
