I I WAYLAYER IN TRIUMPH ♦ Earns Easily Achieved Decision in Feature Race at Belmont Park. • Marshall Fields Villon Outstays Barcelona Pete in Secondary Attraction of Ordinary Program. t NEW YORK, N. Y., May 31.— In a card made up of overnight races the best offering of the Westchester Racing Association at Belmont Park yesterday was the Salvidere, a claiming handicap, over the mile and a furlong distance. It brought victory to Way-layer, the three-year-old son of Waygood that races for the Mereworth Stud Stable and Moine carried the silks of the Montalvo Stud Stable in second place with Helianthus, the top weight from the Brookmeade Stable, saving third from L. J. Marks Mouthpiece. The only other starter was John McPher-sons Glastonbury. After the tremendous Decoration Day crowd there was a natural falling off in the attendance today, but conditions were ideal for the sport and a goodly number of enthusiasts enjoyed the sport. In the Salvidere, it was Helianthus that cut out all the running. He was really the only "speed" horse of the company and George Fields permitted him to gallop along in front under a stiff restraint. Waylayer raced after him and then came Moine, while both Mouthpiece and Glastonbury were outrun through the first half mile. As the turn for home was neared, there was some closing up back of the Brookmeade colt, but he was still showing the way as he rounded for home. Then as Waylayer began to wear him down, Fields shook up his mount and then went to the whip in a vain effort to save the day. It was of no avail and in the final furlong the son of Waygood moved into the command and came home comparatively easy winner by a length and a half. Moine also finished strongly when he, too, disposed of Helianthus in the closing stages to beat him a like distance for second place. Mouthpiece came with a mighty rush when too late and, after losing considerable ground in the stretch, he was going in better style than the three that beat him to the finish at the heels of Helianthus. Glastonbury had run a dull race and at no time reached a contending position. Three-year-olds met in a mile and a furlong condition race that was styled the Colin. It brought a better contest than the Salvidere with Marshal Fields Villon the winner over Morton L. Schwartzs Barcelona Pete. Far back of these Mrs. C. O. Iselins Magyar beat L. Sindlers Jimmy Sutro for third. Clarence Buxton will ship J. H. Louch-heims Economic to Bainbridge Park Wednesday for his engagement in the Ohio i State Derby next Saturday. F. J. Bryan returned from Toronto and resumed his duties with the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association. Final declarations for the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga are due June 1.
