Jeffords 9 to 5 J A HOMEWOOD, 111., June 17 The American Derby for three-year-olds, and with a gross value of. 0,000, is at hand. Tomorrow this coveted old classic of the turf, and one of the outstanding features of the Chicago racing season, will be run for the twenty-fourth time and for the seventh in successive years at the picturesque and popular course of the Washington Park Jockey Club. Established in 1884, the race was discontinued with the cessation of the sport here in 1904, but since revival in 1926, has occupied an even higher and more important niche among American turf features than at any time during its glorious run through the eighties and nineties. It is one of the championship contests in this particular division and it is doubtful if the result of any running since its revival carried more importance than will attach itself to the outcome of tomorrows race. From the East W. M. Jeffords Boatswain; Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Stepenfetchit; W. R. Coes Osculator; M. L. Schwartz Gusto, and W. S. Kilmers Sunmelus are here to bid for the honors and, meeting as they will, such westerners as Knebelkamp and Morris Adobe Post; A. Bartelsteins Yonkel; Leiter estates Prince Hotspur; C. B. Shaffers Marmion; H. P. Headleys Big Beau; J. B. Respess Our Fancy, and possibly the Nash Brothers Minton; A. Sabaths I Say and W. T. Waggoner and Sons Rowdy Boy. intersectional color is at the maximum during the modern record of the race. EXPECT HARD STRUGGLE. Although Boatswain, winner of the recently run Withers Stakes, in which Burgoo King, ill-fated winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, failed badly, and Stepenfetchit, so well remembered for his fine performance in the Kentucky Derby, in which he finished third, are reigning favorites with enthusiasts, horseman and critics, a warm if not bitter contest is likely to ensue. Boatswain, a son of the mighty Man o War, will undertake to carry top weight of 126 pounds, giving eight pounds to each of his opponents and with decision at the end of a mile and one-quarter, he has a herculean job on his hands. His rivals promise to put up plenty of contention and if the Jeffords colt comes through successfully horsemen look for him to go on to the championship. Osculator, second in both the Withers and Belmont Stakes, and the improving Gusto add much to the strength of the eastern contingent, while Sunmelus, most lightly regarded of the five invaders, is conceded only an outside chance. CHICAGO REPRESENTATIVES. Adobe Post and Yonkel, first and second, respectively, in the Derby trial at the local track Monday last, and Marmion and Prince Hotspur, all Chicago-owned candidates, shape up as the more formidable of the westerners among the fourteen named for the fixture through the regular procedure today. None of the foremost western hopes, is credited with an important stakes triumph, but several have at times flashed high quality and a little improvement tomorrow might suffice to bring one of the home brigade into the honors. Continued on twenty-first pagej DERBY DAY AT WASHINGTON Continued from first page. If decided on a fast track, the course mark of 2:04 for the distance is believed in grave danger, no few good judges reasoning that with the racing strip a trifle faster this year than ever before, the race will bring a new track record, provided, of course, no rain falls before the battle is on. The more doubtful starters today were Rowdy Boy and I Say, the latter, the only filly entered, having an excellent chance to start if the track is muddy or sloppy. With, twelve participating in the contest, the race will have a gross value of 9,225, of which, 0,000 is added by the management. Col. M. J. Winn and C. W. Hay, president and general manager, respectively, of the Washington Park Jockey Club, confidently believe that with a good break in weather the race will attract the largest crowd ever admitted to the grounds. Last year- the American Derby 15ay throng was one of the largest at a Chicago course since the revival of racing in Illinois and with interest sharper than ever before and reservations heavy sunny skies may clinch a record turnout.
