STIRRING CONTEST LIKELY Gallant Knight, Polydorus, Spanish Play and Pittsburgher in Pea-hody Memorial Handicap. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 23. It is possible that the turf going public may be treated to the best race of the meeting when the field lines up at the barier at Washington Park Saturday in the 0,000 added Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap, which will headline the closing days program. Numbered among the likely starters are the pick of the older division, including Gallant Knight and Polydorus, record breakers at the meeting, the consistent and game Spanish Play and his arch rival, Pittsburgher, as well as Burning Up also a track record holder, Dr. Freeland, Yonkel, Canfli, Plucky Play, Karl Eitel, Sidney Grant and Prince Atheling. Although the public will doubtlessly be attracted to Gallant Knight and Polydorus, due to their recent records, they would do well not to overlook Spanish Play. Although beaten by the aforesaid pair on different occasions recently, with a little better break in racing luck Spanish Play could have won both events and may turn the trick Saturday. Against Polydorus the Knebelkamp and Morris colt was beaten by a head but was gaining, while against Gallant Knight he struck himself early in the contest, dropping almost ten lengths behind the favorite, and then being beaten by slightly over one length. Both races were impressive and give the colt, which will carry 118 pounds, a grand chance. Polydorus will carry 120 pounds while Gallant Knight, of course, is top weight with 123 pounds. Many are of the opinion that with such a brilliant field going postward in the Pea-body the track record of 2:04, made by Montanaro in 1929, will be eclipsed. Gallant Knight was winner of the race last season in 2:04. He carried the same poundage in that race that he will carry this season. The track record breaking achievement of the Audley Farm Stable star indicates that he is on edge for the contest.
