PORTO WINS IN MARYLAND Glen Wild Purse at Havre Results in Stirring Contest. Swatter Extends Linton Farm Colorbearer to Limit Sweeping Light Disappoints Many Backers. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., Sept. 26 A close contest occurred in the Glen Wild Purse, which headed todays program of the Harford Association, with the Linton Farms Portden being the most successful of the seven horses that raced over one mile and seventy yards. Branncastle Farms Swatter took second place, with John Marschs Chief John third. The second weeks racing opened here with a fair sized crowd in attendance. The patrons backed Sweeping Light into favoritism in the feature, but the Herbert Pulitzer colt could not keep up after the first three-quarters, dropping back thereafter to wind up in fifth position. Portden led all the way after assuming command on the club house turn, but he had to be hustled along by R. Leischman in the final drive to stall off the challenges of Swatter and Chief John. His victorious margin was a length, while Swatter outgamed Chief John by a half length for second place. The latter was just a head before Anni-messic, with the favorite some distance farther back. The distance was run in the good time of 1:43. As Portden took a clear lead on the first turn, Sweeping Light was in second place with Ladino third. Chief John, which had to be eased back soon after the start, moved up on the inside in the back stretch and was third passing the half mile post. Chief John continued to gain on the inside and wrested second place from Sweeping Light coming into the stretch. Swatter also had started to gain on -the outside and had reached a contending position for the final drive. Leischman sensed Portdens danger and kept his mount all through the stretch but Chief John was unequal to the task of overtaking him, also of staving off Swatters bid for second place. Annimessic, which was well back in the early stages, came fast on the inside at the end and finished fastest of all although he did not have room to be a menace to the victor. C. V. Whitneys Disdainful four times stake winner this season scored her sixth victory in seven starts by capturing the Gadabout Purse, the secondary feature, running the five and a half furlongs distance in 1:07. J. E. Wideners Crazy Jane finished a half length ahead of Mrs. Riesera Muslet which took third by a length over Speed Boat. Burnside, owned by L. A. Wynston, Jr., rewarded the form players with a clean cut score in the second race. Wresting the lead from Worthington at the lower turn and racing Sir Kendall into defeat during the first three-quarters, Burnside held the former safe in the stretch drive by a length and a half. Worthington finished two and a half lengths before Sir Kendal. Air King made up some ground at the end to be fourth. D. Bellizzi was astride the victor.
