WISE ANNES IMPRESSIVE WIN Takes Measure of Disdainful and Volette in Laurels Feature. E. R. Bradleys Barometer First in Steeplc-chase Attendance Is Large and Much Interest Manifested. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 12. Wise Anne, Mrs. W. C. Weants swift running daughter of Wise Counsellor, which was brought to the races during the Miami season last winter, took the measure of the C. V. Whitney pair Disdainful and "Volette hen this afternoon when she was winner of the Isabella, a dash for juvenile fillies. Disdainful finished in second place, with her stablemate Volette saving third from Adolph E. Pons Swivel. With a continuation of bright, clear weather, the crowd was big and there was a great deal of interest manifested in the goc-1 program provided. Tb start in the Isabella was a good one and Workman at once went out with Disdainful, while Wise Anne raced along closely after her. Miss Purray and Fanfern, closely lapped, followed these and then came Volette, which had left from the outside stall and was running along on the outside. It vas shortly after turning out of the back stretch that Leyland moved with Wise A .ne until she was going stride for stride with Disdainful. Workman tried to rouse the Whitney filly, but she was unable to hold the daughter of Wise Counsellor and Wise Anne drew by to speed away to a clear lead. Disdainful had given her best, but it was not good enough. Through the stretch Wise Anne never faltered and drew out until at the finish she had three lengths to spare. Disdainful, under a hard ride, stuck it out to save second place, but it was only by half a length, while Volette, fortunate in finding her way through on the inside, only took third from Swivel in the last nod. Swivel left the post slowly and she had to close a considerable gap to take fourth place. E. R. Bradleys Barometer was winner of the Meadows Steeplechase Handicap. Closely lapped back of him came John R. Macom-bers Redbridge, Mrs. F. M. Goulds Daniel Soot and Thomas Hitchcocks Silverskin. The only other starter was L. Perrys French gelding, Koenigsmark II., and he was badly beaten off all the way. It was not until well into the back field the last turn of the course that the high weights made any move, and the move of Bellhouse on Barometer was matched by Mr. McKinney on Redbridge, and both were soon alongside Silverskin, but the Hitchcock colt still had something left, and he was still showing the way into the front field. There Mr. McKinney saved much ground with bridge, and the three came to the last fence lapped with Barometer on the outside. In the short run home, the Bradley champion drew out slightly to be the winner by a length and a half. In the meantime Daniel Soot was charging along with a great .burst Continued on thirtieth page. Koenigsmark II. was only swinging into the front field when the others finished, but he completed the course without accident. After having scored with three of hia mounts Tuesday, Buddy Hanford began the day with another success when, under a powerful ride, he landed Lone Hand the winner in the first. It was a close fit, with Von Sipn second and Sky Haven a distant third before Pure Pact, which raced for the Sagamore Stable. From a good start Von Sion was the one to take early command, and for an instant Busy Ike was in closest pursuit, but he waa soon displaced by Sky Haven, while Axentea was rushed into third place after leaving the post rather sluggishly. Lone Hand was back of these, and Hanford was forced to go to the outside to find racing room. Before the stretch was reached it was evident he would share in the purse division, but he did not seem to have a chancse to catch Von Sion, which was well clear of the field. Hanford persevered, and a hard drive from the head of the stretch saw the son of Single. Foot overtake the leaders one after the other, and in the closing stridesi he ran down Von Sion to be winner by a head. Sky Haven was tiring to be another four lengths back, andPure Pact to race fourth outfin-ished Axentea and had closed a considerable gap. Von Sion was a surprise, and he paid 08.80 for second place. Ming Sun proved best in the sixth and he scored with something to spare over Lucky Racket, with Southtour third before Grand Rox. My Fergus and Southtour were the ones to show the way and for a time Tar-quin was in third place, but Laurin had Ming Sun under restraint back. of them and he made no move with the winner until the pacemakers showed signs of weakening.
