DURVA WINS AT CICERO Lone Star Stable Colorbearer Victorious in Feature. .Weather Shows Improvement After Stretch of Bad Days Brilliant Girl Triumphs in Opener. CICERO, 111., Oct. 13 Durva, the useful daughter of Dubrar II. Neva S., which races for the Lone Star Stable and cleverly ridden by jockey Jimmy Neel, was the winner of the best race at Sportsmans Park today, with Vagabond second and Mill Hand caving the short end of the purse. There was some improvement in the weather whe:i the sun broke through the heavy clouds for the first time this week and considerably warmer weather was the result. The seven claiming events, which were witnessed by the usual crowd of regulars, were contested over a slow track. A liberal number of the well backed choices were the victors in a number of the races. After a short delay at the post the field in the Oak Park was off to a good start. Durva, which occupied the rail position, immediately raced into a good lead, closely attended by Inferno Lad. She was taken up and cleverly rated on the first turn, but when entering the stretch she bolted slightly to the center of the track. Inferno Lad was hugging the rail and was looming up as a dangerous contender, but Neel quickly brought Durva over and she took the next turn nicely and from there on it was only a romp. Vagabond, which had replaced Inferno Lad as the challenger when the latter tired on the second turn and raced wide, tried vainly to catch the flying Durbar filly, but it was to no avail and she was a handy winner by two lengths. Mill Hand offered a mild challenge, but could no better than hold Switch safe. Durva was. well backed. NORTH SHADOW FAILS. Brilliant Girl, racing for M. C. Schwarz, earned her first victory when she won the initial race, at five furlongs, for two-year-old maidens. Politians Best, an outsider, was second and third fell to Go Easy. North Shadow was the offending favorite when she tired after racing with the leaders for a half mile. "Tex" Anderson, leading rider at the meeting, had the mount on the winner and rode a perfect race, saving ground all the way. One of the worst bands of bad post actors of the meeting matched strides in the second race, over five furlongs, for three-year-olds and over, and the winner turned up in the Colgate Stables Bracadale filly, Petabit. Type was second, and the favorite, Take Off, third. The winner probably scored a lucky win as Take Off, after refusing to line up, was practically eliminated at the start, being almost left when the field was dispatched. WINNING COMBINATION. Jockey T. Shaw and Noon Play formed the winning combination in the third race when the pair were successful in defeating Nick D., Sir John K. and seven other older platers over five furlongs. Shaw had the son of My Play off to a flying start and, saving ground on the turns, was only cantering at the finish. Noon Play was the first winning favorite of the day. King Cherokee won his second in as many starts at the meeting when he galloped to an easy victory over Bold Robin, War Time and six bad actors in the fourth over seven furlongs. McLaren had the son of Cherokee off fast and, hugging the rail throughout, he was only cantering at the finish. La Golon-drlna was a disappointment, as was Rocky Way, which raced sluggishly. Memphis Lass and Black Mag were practically left and had no chance. E. H. Langlois registered six horses Wednesday morning but was unable to find stable room at Sportsmans Park and was forced to van his horses to Lincoln Fields. In the shipment were Astute, Sweet One, Eventful, Tracaw, Whang Doodle and Baked Apple.
