SURPRISES AT LATONIA 4 Thundertones Victory in Warsaw . Purse Days Outstanding Upset. Knebelkamp Racer Romps to Victory Over El Puma and Others Bettina H. Among Winners. LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 13. Surprises featured todays racing at the local course of the Latonia Jockey Club and the Warsaw Claiming Purse, in which seven of the better grade older platers raced one mile and seventy yards, was among the several events swept by outsiders. In this, Thundertone, whose in and out racing has been a source of grief for his owner C. H. Knebelkamp, of Louisville, put on some near-champion stuff to win eased up by five lengths from El Puma. Oh Dave, favorite, finished third, with Easy, Habanero, Brush Down and Puppet in his wake. Taking command almost before the race was under way, the winner dominated with ridiculous ease and the diminutive George South never called upon him for his best. The good, but cuppy track was not to the victors liking and running the distance in 1:44, his effort was a good one. Those in the good-sized crowd who backed the victor received a return of 0.40 for each straight. Others in the small field furnished an interesting contest for the minor parts of the purse and El Puma outfinished Oh Dave by a head for second, with the latter a length before Easy. SUMMER-LIKE WEATHER. Summer-like weather was the order and, while the attendance was appreciably lighter than on opening day, speculation held up surprisingly well, especially the daily double pool, which equaled that of the previous day. Tea Topics graduated from the maiden ranks with the running of the opening race, in which twelve maiden two-year-old fillies met at the three-quarters distance. The winner, ridden by G. Elston, won easily, with Miss Kid second and Annie Ormont third. Both Miss Kid and Annie Ormont were assisted by stable companions, Lady of Grace being coupled in the betting with Miss Kid and Cousin Ethel combined with Annie Ormont. Showing speed from the start, Tea Topics was the leader after a quarter and, drawing away from Annie Ormont in the stretch, was not threatened by Miss Kid, which outfinished Annie Ormont in the closing strides. Forced to lose much ground, Rose Glory, which finished fourth, was unlucky to fail to account for second honors. Greatly aided by good luck, Bettina H., ridden by G. South, accounted for the winners end of the purse in the second race. Twelve two-year-olds faced the starter, and much crowding, in which several of the horses were involved, marked the running. Axtel, which finished second, encountered much adverse luck, as did Soeur Blanche, which finished third. Helen Bab, which had a big following, ran into interference on two occasions, and had very limited chance to settle into a good stride. The distance was three-quarters. RED ROAMER DECISIVELY. The third race, also for plater two-year-olds and at six furlongs, resulted in a big surprise when Red Roamer, racing for the Le Bus Brothers of Lexington, was the winner. He won decisively with Chuck B. second, and Bonnie Marita third. H. Tinker found room a-plenty on the inside as the victor came through with fine late speed and, passing many of his rivals between the quarter and eighth post, he was in front soon after reaching the final furlong and drew out fast thereafter. Chuck B. showed good speed from the outset, but when shaking off Sweeprush and Monks Star entering the stretch, bore out badly, leaving a big opening for the winner and Bonnie Marita along the rail. The winner returned odds of slightly better than 19 to 1 and, coupled with Bettina H. in the daily double, yielded 19. Sabula, the well-bred daughter of Macaw and Florida Blossom, in Mason and Hangers. Warm Stable, widely outclassed the eleven maiden fillies that opposed her in the fourth race or Wyoming Purse, with the result that she won easily, with New Baby second and Deb third. After breaking fast, the winner was permitted to make her own pace and, drawing into safe command before two of the six furlongs had been covered, she held sway thereafter. Holding on well, New Baby outstayed Deb, which tired after filling the runner-up position for five-eighths. Gladys Continued on eleventh page. SURPRISES AT LATONIA Continued from first page. S., third choice to the winner and New Baby, was badly outrun all the way. Choices fought it out in the sixth, race with" Billy Jones the. .winner in a thrilling finish,-in which the victor outstayed Bill Bboney by a half length and the latter saed second by a nose from Slash. The latter, finished? : strongest of the leaders an$.,yas swiftly wearing down Bill Looney. in the final, stages where the winner, which was indulged with all the pacemaking, tired.
