ACTIVE AT NEW ORLEANS Daily Arrivals Keep Things Moving at Jefferson Park. Large Sum Spent in Improving Shrewsbury Plant New Road From Claiborne Highway. NEW ORLEANS, La., Nov. 15. Scenes very much akin to those enacted here the past week were repeated at Jefferson Park and the Fair Grounds today. There were the usual arrivals to increase the horsemen, the followers colonies, also additions to the racing stables and preparations for the opening of Jefferson Park a week from Thursday moved along at a steady pace. With the completion of improvements and renovation of the plant now well under way, Jefferson Park will be at its best. The Jefferson Park Fair Association is spending a considerable amount for this work, which includes the construction of a new road from the Claiborne Highway to the grandstand, enlarging and improving of the parking grounds and painting of the grandstand, club house and other buildings. R. S. Eddy, Jr., general manager of the track, has personally supervised this work and he is proud of the fact that when completed the Shrewsbury plant will be more attractive and possess more features than ever before. Much of the ground used as parking space is being surfaced with a firm combination of gravel and tar and it will greatly improve the drainage. LARGE EQUINE COLONY. General manager Eddy today estimated the equine population of Jefferson Park at 450 and if all stables yet to arrive get in as scheduled all stalls will be filled by Friday or Saturday of the current week. Arrivals today included a division of G. R. Brysons stable and the horses of John Burt-schell, D. Barzilay and A. N. Sharpies will race here. They came from Maryland and all unloaded in good condition. In charge of George Riola, Bryson shipped eight, of which four are yearlings. The latter are among the best looking of that age the Maryland turfman has sent here in several years. They comprise a colt and filly by Single Foot, a filly by Canter and a gelding by Pharamond H. The older division is made up of Axenlad, Marion T., Peter Pridd and Porgie, and five others, headed by the good filly, Flora Canter, will augment the stable in about ten days. The latter quintet remained in Maryland for the Bowie meeting. Burtschells small stable includes Lullaby II., Slanta and Lady Hockbuyer, while D. Barzilay had Miss Alden and Southco and A. N. Sharpies Walter Jr. in the shipment. Moravian, owned by Burtschell, was taken ill shortly before the stable loaded and was left in Maryland. JEFFERSON FUTURITY. The Jefferson Futurity, to be run December 10, is expected to prove one of the big attractions of the meeting. This race is given over to two-year-olds and will be run at the mile distance. Serving as a preliminary test of candidates for the Jefferson Derby, which will be renewed for the first time January 21, closing day of the meeting, the Futurity takes on much importance. A rough survey of the younger material in many of the stables now quartered at the two local tracks revealed an abundance of high class material for such an event, and racing secretary J. G. Reeder believes that this new feature will grow into one of the big events of the winter. Placide Frigerio, Jefferson Park superintendent, has the racing strip in good condition and but for the final touches it is in readiness for the opening. Frigerio looks for the track to prove faster than in several years, but will not permit it to become too hard, and horsemen can safely count on a track that will not be injurious to the more delicate-legged performers. Registration of horses again occupied much of the time of secretary Reeder and others of the staff of racing officials and, with horsemen co-operating in speeding this important detail, it will be out of the way before Reeder and his assistants go into the work of arranging the daily programs. The staff of clerks to work in the certificate department during the meeting has been selected. The "daily double," introduced here last winter, again goes on and facilities for handling this novel betting feature has bsec ereatlv imnrovecL
