FIRST SHIPMENTS TO CUBA Two Carloads Shipped From Latonia Monday for Island. Majority of Owners Planning Stopovers at New Orleans and Miami Before Going to Island. .LATONIA, Ky., Nov. 15. The first of the many large shipments of thoroughbreds to Oriental Park got away from Latonia and Chicago Monday morning. Although in former years it required a special train to transfer the horses from Latonia to Cuba, this year, due to the late opening, the fifty-day meeting hot starting until January 21, only two cars left here for the island track. A majority of the owners here who have Oriental Park reservations will ship first to Jefferson Park or Florida instead of going direct to Havana. In the two carloads getting away Monday from Latonia were the horses of Morris Griner, L. J. Sandrock, W. N. Potts, Walter Ridenour, Howard Stearns, E. Albright, J. F. ONeil and others. The car from Chicago transferred a division of the Mrs. E. Dene-mark large stable. Trainer R. T. Watts sent one division from Chicago to Jefferson Park before proceeding to Cuba. Although a majority of the leading stables here made nominations for the fourteen stakes to be decided during the Oriental Park meeting, the Cuban Grand National Handicap, the test at one mile and one-quarter that will be decided March 12, drew the heaviest list of nominations. The 0,000 added Handicap does not close until February 1, while the other thirteen stakes close January 2. Weights for the Grand National will be released February 10, and the second payment for the stake will be made February 21. This will allow the owners an opportunity of thoroughly trying their charges, as well as knowing what weight they must carry before being called on to make an additional payment. - The Grand National climaxes a "gala week," during which four stakes will be decided. The Grand Drawing Handicap is down for decision March 5, with the Trial Handicap carded for March 8 and the Cuban Juvenile Stakes featuring the program for March 11. Clyde Van Dusen, who seldom misses an Oriental Park meeting, plans on having one of the largest and best stables that he ever shipped to the track. In addition to the Latonia Oaks winner Betty Derr, Van Dusen -will have Cee Tee, which finished fourth in the last renewal of the Latonia Championship Stakes; Pre War, a son of Man o War and Sherbet, and several others. For two-year-old racing Van Dusen is sending some of the best of the home-breds from Charles T. Fishers Dixiana Farm, as well as several of his own breeding. From Van Dusens crop of juveniles will be sons and daughters of Torchilla, an old favorite with Cuban jfans. It was at Oriental Park that Torchilla finished his racing career, with victories in the Inaugural and New Years Handicaps. Jack Howard is another who made liberal nominations to the fourteen stakes. Howard was represented in the first running of the Cuban Grand National Handicap by Swin-field. The race was won that year by the three-year-old Boys Howdy, and with the large number of new two-year-olds named for the race it is not improbable that they will play an important part in the 1933 renewal. Howard Wells, who handles the large racing stables of C. E. Hamilton, D. B. Midkiff and Howard Oots, is "eyeing" the stakes, and with Wells shipping a large band to Florida, it is not improbable that he will have representation in several of the features. S. S. Bender, who is assisting horsemen shipping to Oriental Park, goes from here to Bowie to supervise the Maryland shipments. From that point he will leave for New Orleans to handle the big shipments after the close of the Jefferson Park meeting.
