SENADO WINS STEEPLECHASE « High -Priced Ryan Horse Scores in First Attempt. « Makes Partial Amends for Failure on Flat —Pimlico Opens With Days Proceeds to Charity. ♦ BALTIMORE, Md., May 1.— Senado, the son of High Cloud and Felinda II., for which Barry Vail Ryan paid a high price only to be disappointed, had some return for his investment when the four-year-old, making his first start through the field, was winner of the Linstead Steeplechase this ; afternoon. This was the best race of an excellent program offered by the Maryland . Jockey Club at the famous old Pimlico i course. It was a day of charity racing, and there will be another day devoted to charity, , tomorrow, with the regular meeting of the i club to begin Wednesday. Delightfully warm weather and interesting sport attracted a large crowd to the Old 1 Hill Top grounds and a considerable sum t was realized for the relief fund. The Linstead Steeplechase was a contest t over the short course and a field of fifteen t went to the post, with only three of them i failing to complete the journey. It was Mrs. . F. Goulds Daniel Soot which raced to second • place, with Reverence, from the Justa t Farm Stable, beating Quick March for third. . Both Senado and Reverence were in the ; field group. The three that came to grief were Shamus, , which went down at the water with E. . Mitchell, Cherry Brandy, which unseated W. . Collins at the ninth fence, and Stefan Jr., , from which D. Fuller was thrown at the j twelfth fence. It was a good start and Senado was the 2 one to set most of the pace. Stefan Jr. was the one to go along with Senado for a turn of the field and he was well up in the running until he made his mistake and Fuller had his tumble. It was after Stefan Jr. was eliminated that Reverence and Daniel Soot came into contention and the last turn of the field Sims rushed the last named into the lead and he was showing the way leaving the back stretch. A disappointment of the running was Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Hamptonian. This fellow was ridden by G. H. "Pete" Bostwick and, on his schooling, it was confidentially expected he would give a good account of himself. He was never able to reach a contending position and his jumping was below par. Cherry Brandy was going well when he made his mistake that unseated Collins, but Sansarica ran a dull race and came out decidedly sore.
