BIG CROWD AT MOUNT ROYAL MONTREAL, Que., May 20.— Racing received a tumultuous welcome back to Montreal today when one of the biggest crowds in the history of Mount Royal course packed the plant for the opening of racing under the jurisdiction of the new Quebec Racing Association. A crowd variously estimated from 8,000 to 10,000 crowded the big plant* At the peak of the afternoon the grandstand, seating 4,500 was jammed, and the huge lawn so crowded that progress was almost impossible, while the clubhouse had a capacity crowd. It was the most cheering start for racing here in five or six seasons* The running of the Mount Royal Handicap, feature race of the opening card, provided a sharp upset when Cupboard, making his first start of the year, scored handily over a smart band that included several winners of outstanding races on southern tracks during the winter campaign. a
