HAWTHORNE HANDICAP LOCAL ATTRACTION TODAY . - p Fourteen Named for First of Six Outstanding Features at Cicero Course Plucky Play and Gallant Sir Top Weights, With 124 Pounds Each- Management Prepares for Immense Crowd CICERO, 111., Aug. 4. Headed by Plucky Play, winner of the 1931 running of the race, and his crack stable-companion, Gallant Sir, a field of fourteen, of which ten are almost certain to answer the call to the post, was named today for the seventh annual running of the ,000 added Hawthorne Handicap, first, of six outstanding features to be run during the current Hawthorne meeting and lodged in the honor position on tomorrows program at the local track. In addition to the aforementioned Norman W. Church stars, the field includes D. A. Woods Indian Runner; Shandon Farms Evergold and At Top; A. A. Baronis Way-layer and Bamboula; T. H? McCaffreys Big Brand; A. Pons Swivel; Audley Farms Late Date; N. E. Stantons Action; J. F. Adams Rehoboth and J. B. McKees Jim Dandy. The contest will be over the mile and one-eighth route and barring a change in weather will be staged under fine conditions. The track, showing but little effects of the hard drenching it receiv-d Wednesday night, was within a few degrees of its fastest condition when the last of "todays races was run and with the clear and cool weather continuing the next twenty-four hours conditions should be of the finest. Plucky Play and Gallant Sir are to carry top weight of 124 pounds each or five more than Indian Runner, winner of the Arlington Inaugural Handicap and Stars and Stripes Handicap at Arlington Park. Weights to be carried by the others are from seven to twenty-seven pounds under the 119 pounds Indian Runner must shoulder. While the Church entry is expected to rule a pronounced choice, Indian Runner, Way-layer, Big Brand and Swivel will not want for supporters and horsemen look for this group to play the principal parts and furnish possibly one of the best contests of the season. The race last year was won by Faireno, with My Dandy second and Big Brand third, while in 1931 Sun Beau and Paul Bunyan finished in second and third places back of Plucky Play. In 1930 Brown Wisdom, Lady Broadcast and My Dandy swept the first three positions and in 1929, when the race Continued on twenty-second page. Flat Iron, winner of the first running in 1927, finished second to Hydromel in the second staging a year later. With such an important attraction, Hawthorne will be the mecca of Chicago racing enthusiasts for the day and the track management is prepared to accommodate one of the larger crowds of the present Chicago season. There will be no increase in admission charges.
