EQUIPOISE IN AT 142 Whitneys Champion Among Entries for Todays Saratoga Handicap. United States Hotel Stakes and Bev-erwyck Steeplechase Complete Triple Stake Attractions. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y. Aug. 4. Equipoise, the champion, has been named through the entry box to start in the Saratoga Handicap, at one mile and a quarter, the big feature of Saturdays program. The magnificent son of Pennant and Swinging, that has brought so much fame to the. C. V. Whitney silks, will have to shoulder 142 pounds if trainer Healey decides to send him to the post. Handicapped under the crushing burden of 139 pounds, the victory in the Wilson Stakes on Thursday imposed a three pound penalty which brings the weight to just sixteen pounds over the scale. It had been intimated that the next engagement for the champion would be in the Hawthorne Gold Cup and that excessive handicap weights would be avoided. As a matter of fact Equipoise appears well able to take up 142 pounds and carry it to victory in the Saratoga Handicap, but there is some doubt that he will be among those that go to the post. Opposing the great chestnut, and second in the weights, comes the Wheatley Stables Dark Secret, under 123 pounds. Then there is Morton L. Schwartz Gusto at 119 pounds, Larranaga, winner of the Cuban Grand National under 116 pounds. The others are Osculator. War Glory, winner of the Dwyer, Caesars Ghost and Neverfade. Each one of those in the field has shown recent excellent preparation for the race and of course Equipoise, should he be raced, is right at the top of his form, as was shown by his cantering victory in the Wilson Stakes Thursday. There are two other attractions for the first Saturday of the Saratoga Association meeting. These are the United States Hotel Stakes, fcr two-year-olds, and the Bever-wyck Steeplechase, which is under selling conditions. Continued on twenty-second page. EQUIPOISnN AT 142 Continued from first page. For the United States Hotel Stakes, which has a guaranteed value of ,500, nine of the eligibles have been named. Top weight goes to Black Buddy, from the Greentree Stable. He has to take up 127 pounds, five over the scale. He will have First Minstrel for a running mate in the prize. Cavalcade, the son of Lancegaye and Pas-tile, that races for Mrs. Dodge Sloanes Brookmeade Stable, and performed so well at Arlington Park, takes up 125 pounds, and trainer Smith has also named National Anthem from the same stable. Red Wagon, which was a good second to Elylee in the Flash, is named from the Sagamore Stable and Warren Wrights Calumet Farm is represented by the good colt Hadagal. The others of the company are C. V. Whitneys maiden Sainted, the Middleburg Stables Trillium, and Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun-ador. From such a field there should come an excellent contest. Only six will parade in the steeplechase feature. Of these, two will carry the John Sanford silks in Rudolf and Ivory II. Jack Anthony will race for the Greentree Stable, Gwladys Whitney will have Cito as her color bearer, Crumpler will race for Mrs. F. Ambrose Clark and the other is Dr. J. P. Jones Shylock. The card is a truly good one for the first week end of sport at the beautiful course and with a promise of return to fast going and good weather conditions it is assured the crowd will be of record proportions. Should all eight named for the Saratoga Handicap go to the post it will gross ,550 and have a net value of ,425 to the winner. The United States Hotel Stakes is of ,500, but with nine named to race it will reach a gross of ,175 and its net value to the winner will be ,525.
