READY FOR DETROIT RACING Many Changes and Improvements Since Last Years Inaugural Meeting Will Begin Next Thursday and andContinue Continue for 120 Days 25000 Added AddedDetroit Detroit Derby Tops Stakes DETROIT Mich May 12 Hardly rec ¬ ognizable after the beneficial changes made since the inaugural meeting last fall the Detroit Fair Grounds of the Detroit Racing Association is about ready for the open ¬ ing of its spring meeting starting next Thursday The first session will embrace fortyone days and following it will be the summer and autumn meetings bringing the long season of 120 days to a close October 6 6The The changes were made under the per ¬ sonal direction of general manager Clarence E Lehr and although there are several addi ¬ tional ones to be completed the course will be ready in ample time for Thursdays opening openingMr Mr Lehr was joined this morning by Joseph E Murphy director of racing and Charles McLennan who will serve as racing secretary They made an inspection of the course with manager Lehr and then went over the stakes nominations and the appli ¬ cations for stabling accommodations Both judge Murphy and young McLennan were pleased to learn that more than 325 horses are now quartered at the Fair Grounds track and notifications that 200 more will be here between now and Monday morning morningThe The nominations for the 25000 added Detroit Derby which is being revived this year was what attracted the eagle eye of judge Murphy When he scanned the list of eligibles he immediately said There should be the race of the year All of the threeyearolds to have raced this year are named while there are several that have yet to make their 1934 debut debutDERBY DERBY ENTREES CLOSE MAY 14 14The The Derby to be decided at one mile and threesixteenths is an allowance affair fashioned along the conditions of the Amer ¬ ican Derby and Classic Stakes Nomina ¬ tions for the race close Monday May 14 The entrance fee is 25 with 300 additional to start startThe The Wolverine Handicap for threeyear olds and over with a 2500 added value and the feature of the first Saturdays program also closes Monday After a week of tor ¬ rid weather there was a considerable drop in the temperature this morning But the track was at its best and in addition to a hundred or more horses going through their daily constitutionals about that number vis ¬ ited the Bahr starting gate Schooling has been held for the past three days in charge of William Dickerson a brother of starter Roy Dickerson DickersonDuring During the past twentyfour hours the thoroughbred colony has been greatly in ¬ creased among the leading stables to arrive during that period being those of Charles Bohn and P A Markey president and vice president respectively of the track Leo J Marks Le Mar Stock Farm Stable which embraces twentynine head Joe Chinn with ten and C W Moore with an equal num ¬ ber This morning four horses that will carry the colors of Gilbert Riley former jockey arrived from Louisville LouisvilleWord Word was received by the Detroit man ¬ agement that a division of the C V Whit ¬ ney stable in charge of Jack Healey would arrive here tomorrow while Marshall Lilley is bringing a division of Mrs Payne Whit ¬ neys Green tree Stable here the first of the week weekJack Jack Hayes is expected here from Arling ¬ ton Downs with W T Waggoner Sons Three Ds Stock Farm Stable Monday Ac ¬ cording to a wire received from Clyde Van Dusen trainer of Charles T Fishers De ¬ troitowned Dixiana stable he is sending fourteen head from Louisville Sunday At the same time Arthur Goldblatt is trans ¬ ferring the Sam Furst horses while Charles Irby is sending ten from that place to carry H H Cross Tranquility Farm colors Jack Keene wired that the twelve horses he will have for Detroit racing will leave his Keeneland farm Saturday morn ¬ ing He also stated that apprentice P Roberts will come along with the ship ¬ ment
