Fait Are Most Formidable of His Opponents DETROIT Mich June 15 Another rich stake for threeyearolds is at hand Twelve of that age were named this morning for the 25000 added Detroit Derby to be decided at one mile and threesixteenths here tomorrow One filly Charles T Fishers Detroit owned Mata Hari second leading moneywinning twoyearold of 1933 will again repre ¬ sent her sex against her sterner brothers Mrs Dodge Sloanes mighty Cavalcade which repeated the feat of Spokane by winning both the Kentucky and American Derbys will attempt to add this rich stake to his seasons score while Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Discovery his chief opponent since they began matching strides in the Chesapeake Stakes again will do battle with the son of Lance gaye Time Clock will support his illustrious stablemate while the improved Bien Fait Patchpocket and Plight which ate the dust of the mighty Englishbred in the American Derby challengesAdditions are again offering their challenges Additions have been made to the challeng ¬ ing ranks since Cavalcade won the American Derby and J H Bud Stotler is changing pilots on Discovery in an effort to make the champions throne less secure Ray Sonny Workman who gained additional fame through his brilliant handling 6 Equipoise superb son of Pennant will direct the son of Display in tomorrows race which tops the brilliant spring meeting offered by the Detroit Racing Association at its Fair Grounds course courseGeorge George DJWideners Chicstraw which fin ¬ ished his twoyearold campaign with a vic ¬ tory over Cavalcade will be meeting the Sloane colt for the first time this year He has been brought up to his engagement by Andrew J Joyner considered one of the greatest trainers of all time Another to offer his all for the first time against the mighty Cavalcade is George Willing Jrs Swiftsport His last effort was a victory over older foes in the Broomstick Handicap at Belmont Park A C Schwartz Gay Mon ¬ arch which finished fourth to Peace Chance High Quest and Good Goods in the Belmont Continued on twentyfirst page MOTOR METROPOLIS EXCITED OVER DETROIT DERBY DERBYContinued Continued from first page Stakes J W Parrishs New Deal which was second to Mata Hari in the Illinois Derby and Hal Price Headleys Thomasville com ¬ plete the ranks of those to be meeting the champion for the first time this year yearThe The Derby is the sixth of eight races and with post time for the first race at 215 the field for the feature will go postward about 515 oclock oclockThere There are a few who believe the mile and threesixteenths will not be to Cavalcades liking and point out that he just got up to beat Discovery for the second award in the Preakness Stakes at the same distance But the Sloane colt suffered some adverse luck in that race With twelve starters however he again will be forced to show his greatest at the shorter distance Despite the few that offer this opinion there are not any that believe the Brookmeade entry will not go postward an overwhelming favorite favoriteWith With Joseph E Widener deciding against sending Peace Chance here it prevents set ¬ tling the threeyearold supremacy for all time Cavalcade experienced little trouble in trimming the son of Chance Shot in the Kentucky Derby but the colt showed a cork ¬ ing winning effort in the Belmont Stakes and there are many who always like to see a champion dethroned His absence makes little difference however for with the ex ¬ ception of High Quest stable companion of the colt winners of most of the leading threeyearold races of the year are among the field fieldTime Time Clock won the Florida Derby Plight the Texas Derby and Mata Hari the Illi ¬ nois Derby Riskulus which won the Agua Caliente Derby and Singing Wood which annexed the Withers Stakes were soundly trounced by the champion at every meeting meetingOf Of the field of twelve the Corsicana Stables Bien Fait is the dark horse The improving son of Bubbling Over won the Michigan Cup Handicap here last Satur ¬ day and his final preparation for tomor ¬ rows engagement was a corking one He bowed to Cavalcade in the American Der ¬ by but trainer A G Tarn says the colt had some adverse luck in the Homewood race and he believes he will offer a stronger argument tomorrow tomorrowAnother Another of which the public is dubious is Gay Monarch Max Hirsch has on many oc ¬ casions sprung a surprise in Derbys and it is not unlikely that the son of Royal Minstrel should be better than his seasons races would indicate indicateIn In the draw for post positions Cavalcade drew lucky seven which considering the field starts on the stretch straightaway is a big advantage Luckily Mata Hari whose misbehavior delayed the start of the Kentucky Derby drew number twelve Discovery drew number two and Chicstraw number five With a quarter of a mile run before the first turn there is not much advantage gained from the draw drawCavalcade Cavalcade will be carrying the top weight of the field He shoulders 126 pounds the same assignment he carried in the Kentucky and American Derbys and the Preakness Stakes This calls on him to give away three pounds to Time Clock Mata Hari and Plight while the filly re ¬ ceiving her sex allowance has the lightest impost of 118 pounds The others carry 119 each eachCavalcade Cavalcade was forced to give away weight to Discovery and those that fol ¬ lowed behind him in the American Derby so the allowances appear to nfake little dif ¬ ference ferenceThere There is more than ordinary local inter ¬ est in the race for Mrs Dodge Sloane is a Detroiter and Charles T Fisher like Mrs Sloanes parents the late John Dodge also 5s a pioneer in the automobile in ¬ dustry dustryAlthough Although the Detroit Racing Association held an inaugural meeting last fall it was not until the present season that the cream of the thoroughbred ranks paraded before the Motor City populace This will not be the first Derby offered here as Lissak won one in 1895 Ornament in 1897 and Claude in 1903 They were jun at the old Grosse Point track where the elite of Detroit now have palatial homes homesWith With all reserved seats and boxes taken and a heavy demand for grandstand tickets general manager Clarence Lehr stated this morning that he believed a crowd of 30000 or more would be on hand for the race The free list is entirely sus peiided and only badges that are tax exempt will be honored honoredThe The local weather bureau gave out a forecast for fair and cooler weather for the day and in that event the racing strip will be at its best
