SALLIE GRAY UNPLACED Smith Racer Strong Latonia Favor ¬ ite Disappoints Her Backers Improved Roulade Furnishes One of ofBiggest Biggest Surprises of Meeting Taylor and Clelland Star LATONIA Ky June 15 The Sophomore Purse at six furlongs featured todays pro ¬ gram at Latonia and it resulted in one of the most stunning upsets of the meeting when Mrs W E Smiths Sallie Gray backed down to prohibitive odds failed to get into the money The race was won by Moseley Crumps improved Roulade while Rolanda was second and Rettef third Seven three yearolds started Credit for Roulades victory can be given to Rolanda which raced Sallie Gray into defeat Rolanda forced Sallie Gray which essayed to set the pace to go the first quar ¬ ter in 23 and the half in 47 and this ef ¬ fort took much of the fillys strength for she finished a badly tiring fourth fourthRoulade Roulade moreover had been restrained off this fast pace moving up when the field straightened put for the run home and driving on to victory by a length Rolanda was second a half length in front of Rettef which also finished with a burst of speed Roulades victory was all the more sur prising because previously she had been running among the lower grade sprinters Her performance however was a sterling one for she displayed rare gameness in downing her more popular rivals rivalsExponent Exponent Home Rule and Mimulus which completed the field never reached contention The victor was ridden by D Taylor who was piloting his second winner He was tied with P Clelland for riding honors the latter also having two winners up to the fifth race raceThe The summerlike weather continued here and helped to attract a large crowd crowdThe The Ridgeview Stock Farms Glamorous was established oddson favorite in the sec ¬ ond race and those who backed her down to this figure had nothing to worry about Rac ¬ ing the first quarter under restraint Glam ¬ orous went to the front on the upper turn and from there on won as her rider D Taylor pleased The winners margin at the end was six lengths lengthsPotterton Potterton came from behind tiring horses to be second while third money went to Forest Avenue which also came from be ¬ hind hindGLAMOROUS GLAMOROUS MAKES GOOD GOODThe The Ridgeview Stock Farm made it a double when Ridge Blond accounted for the third race after giving her backers some anxious moments before she was returned a winner over Twill by a half length Ridge Blond breaking first enjoyed a comfort able lead down the back stretch and around the turn but at the head of the home stretch Twill moved to her and the two of them battled it out right down to the wire Twelve pounds the best of the weights prob ¬ ably victoryAnother accounted for Ridge Blonds victory Another well backed favorite gratified the faith placed in her when Lonell took the Williamstown Purse fourth on the card and decided over six furlongs Lonell owned by Gibson and Day won by the barest of mar ¬ gins getting the decision over Lady Pal by a nose while just a half length farther back came Pana Franka FrankaLonell Lonell was away well and forced the early pace set by Pana Franka In the home stretch Lonell dropped back to third place as Lady Pal moved up to take the lead but the Gibson and Day mare came on again and won in a hard drive Lady Pal looked a winner at the eighth pole but she seemed to hang a bit there though she ran a game race Pana Franka was easily best of the rest restSand Sand Cloud left the maiden twoyearold ranks for the account of Hal Price Headley Kentucky turfman when the son of High Cloud and Sandy Lad was the winner of the fifth race Synod was second with the stanchly supported Old Nick third While the winner was forced to come from last place to be two lengths before Synod at the end of the five furlongs the latter was the first in motion and after giving way to Continued on thirtieth page SALLIE GRAY UNPLACED UNPLACEDContinued Continued from first page Carmanchita and Old Nick Synod again in the last furlong beat the latter by two lengths for the second award awardApprentice Apprentice D Taylor rode his third win ¬ ner of the day when he piloted Upsets Lassie home in the sixth race the second best race on the card It too developed a rousing fin ¬ ish with the Dixiana filly beating F P Letelliers Upon a neck at the end of a mile and a sixteenth sixteenthUpsets Upsets Lassie went into the lead after Crania set the pace for a quarter and then clung to her margin the rest of the way She was pressed over every inch of the route first by Crania then by Lady of Grace and finally Upon Lady of Grace fin ¬ ished third four lengths behind the leaders leadersGrania Grania and Mountainy Man which also had some early speed finished fourth and fifth respectively and they were the only other starters
