RECORD CROWD AT DETROIT Largest WeekDay Attendance of Meeting Witnesses Days Sport Entire Program Given Over to Platers Favorites Fare Poorly Playing Oil OilMild Mild Surprise DETROIT Mich June 15 With the ex ¬ ception of the first event which was for maiden twoyearold fillies the sevenrace program offered at the Fair Grounds this afternoon was given over to those from the claiming ranks Despite the unattractive ness of the card the largest weekday crowd of the meeting increased by preDerby vis ¬ itors was present presentThe The sport opened under clear skies which became overcast after the second race and the remaining contests were decided under threatening clouds which gave forth a strong threat of rain The humidity was bad and although the temperature was not as high as on other days the conditions were other than pleasant pleasantFavorites Favorites were again in the minority and when Miss M Wests Playing On was a driv ¬ ing winner of the fourth race which at ¬ tracted the best field from the claiming ranks it marked the third victory of the afternoon for those held in mild esteem At the end of the threequarters the Keene land Studs Don Romiro which enjoyed fa ¬ voritism was second a length back of the winner and a nose before A Bartelsteins Mild which held the same advantage over H H Browns Adobe Post PostA A field of nine started and Playing On which was making her third start in four days was the chief cause of the long delay and it became necessary to place her on the outside of the stalls before the start could be effected Once aligned Morsel was the first under way but Pete Petrella lost little time in having the daughter of Sweep On in command and after drawing away into a two lengths advantage at the end of the half mile she increased it to three lengths before the end of the fiveeighths At that stage Manners her chief opponent had tired and Don Romiro had moved into contention The latter gradually cut down the winners margin but Mild which had come from last place was offering a strong challenge and Adobe Post had also passed the others While the winner had a clear advantage the next four horses were in close alignment and it required the official placing to sep ¬ arate them themThe The Elmtree Stables Ladykin vhich fin ¬ ished second in her last five starts scored her first victory of the year when she was a driving winner of the second race Capi ¬ talist the favorite was second a length and a half back of the winner and two lengths before Inferno Lad which was much the best of the ten others at the end of the threequarters
