hind this afternoon when a field that in ¬ cluded four of the lesser eligibles for the 35000 Arlington Classic met here in the Algonquin Purse at a mile which served as the feature before the largest crowd of the meeting meetingThomasville Thomasville won the race finishing the mile in 137 after having loafed along in second place during the first half of it A length and a half behind was Indian Sa ¬ lute the second staying threeyearold of William Sachsenmaiers stable Three lengths behind him a thoroughly beaten third was Gallant Mac He had been backed to equal favoritism with the winner led to the stretch in making a slow pace had no excuse what ¬ ever and was simply not there when Thom ¬ asville and Indian Salute collared him three sixteenths from the finish The Brookmeade Stables Sleuth was fourth and the Calumet Farms Sir Ten fifth fifthGallant Gallant Mac was away slowly on the in ¬ side but long before the field of five had left the chute he fortunately got through next to the inside rail and spurted to the front He was restrained through the back stretch but Thomasville was under a much stronger pull in second place as they ran the quarter in 24 and the half in 47 Rounding the far turn Steffen called on Thomasville and he began to move up pass ¬ ing Gallant Mac early in the stretch Once passed Gallant Mac made little resistance to Indian Salutes challenge and
