GOV SHOLTZ REGAINS FORM Son of Toro Easily Outruns Highly Regarded Wise Prince Good Weather Continues and Attendance Is IsGood Good The Pelican Defeats DefeatsCrazy Crazy Jane SALEM N H June 28 Gov Sholtz showed a return to his best form in ac ¬ counting for the Manchester Purse a five and a half furlongs condition affair that served as the stellar attraction on todays program The son of Toro and Buttress which P A Shaw added to his string via the claiming route in New York defeated F Spatolas highly regarded Wise Prince by a length Well back in third place after setting the pace Wise Sister earned that part for J B Belk Bank Holiday was fourth then followed Hilise Kings Pleasure and Rustic Joe in the order named to complete the field fieldAfter After a delay of three minutes at the post the field was sent away to a good start Wise Sister and Kings Pleasure immediately took up the running with Wise Prince under slight restraint racing lapped on the pair Gov Sholtz had been rather tardy to settle into full stride and was farther back while Hilise followed followedKings Kings Pleasure began tiring from his chase of the pacemaker and started to drop back before the stretch was reached Wise Prince was still close up and under restraint Meanwhile Pete Walls had been working his way into contention Straightening out for the run to the finish Wise Sister was still in command but plainly doing her utmost before the furlong post was neared Gov Sholtz when called on was rushed into command and though Robertson was hard at work on the Wise Counsellor colt he was not equal to the task of keeping pace with the son of Toro in the final drive driveIt It developed into a strictly twohorse af ¬ fair in the drive with Wise Sister more than two lengths back of the Spatolaowned colt and just a neck before Bank Holiday HolidayContinued Continued pleasant weather saw another crowd up to the usual standard on hand to enjoy the sport while weather conditions left little to be desired desiredNine Nine mediocre platers were brought to ¬ gether in the six furlongs first race and it resulted in a stirring finish when Stretch Call was up right at the end to defeat Paper Profits while only half a length farther away and showing the most speed was Grand Acre AcrePaper Paper Profits and Uppercut had the most early speed and staged a duel in front while Stretch Call was under restraint A furlong from the finish Uppercut was in the lead but weakened and started dropping back and then Paper Profits assumed com ¬ mand within the shadow of the finish when Stretch Call came with a rush to gain a narrow decision decisionHughes Hughes was unable to get Grand Acre going in his best style until the last fur ¬ long where he was taken to the outside and closed with a rush and was well clear of Uppercut which had lasted to be fourth fourthLiberty Liberty Oak claimed on his last outing made good at the first asking for T F Swords by accounting for the second race another sprint affair at six furlongs furlongsUnder Under the alert handling of apprentice M Peters Liberty Oak was hustled into the lead in the opening strides increased his ad ¬ vantage after repulsing bids from Flag Time and Front and had enough left to hold safe the closing challenge that Lauretta Nash offered The latter moved up steadily after being far back came to the outside and closing fast was overtaking the winner at every stride and was just a neck short of reversing the verdict at the close closeFlag Flag Time proved to have more left than Front and took the show by a scant half length lengthThe The Pelican in the cheapest race of his career since the Joseph E Widener castoff has been performing registered convin ¬ cingly over the field that opposed him in the third race raceThis This was over the five and a half furlongs distance and the winner ran it in 105 to lead home Crazy Jane by two lengths Though The Pelican had little trouble in earning major honors the duel for third was a gruelling one when Informal barely lasted to have her nose in front of My Purchase PurchasePete Pete Walls rode the Haste gelding in con ¬ fident fashion being contest to remain off the pace established by Informal and Crazy Jane Crazy Jane finally shook off Infor ¬ mal and was clear a quarter from the finish but then Walls made his move on The Peli ¬ can and gradually drew out after passing the furlong pole to win easily
