Here and There on the Turf Bradley Finds Out for Himself Fast Filly Has No Engagements Headley Uncovers Smart Colt Sickness Abates on Long Island William Hurley who trains the western division of Edward R Bradleys stable told the Kentucky sportsman that he had a juve ¬ nile filly that could literally fly Bradley knew the filly could step along a bit be ¬ cause she had won her two starts at Wash ¬ ington Park but he had no comprehensive idea of her class and was anxious to see her run So Hurley entered the filly a small bay daughter of Black Toney and La Troji enne named Black Helen in a five furlongs event at Arlington Park in which her op ¬ ponents were Needle Fraidy Cat World Se ¬ ries Bye Lo and Mrs Fab all youngsters of considerable reputation f fThe The Colonel knew all about World Series having seen the son of Pennant run at Bel mont Park ar he feared the Brookmeade Stable colt brt he must have listened at ¬ tentively to vhat Hurley had to say as Black Helen was made almost a 1 to 2 shot and Bradley must have had something to do with it Anyhow Hurley knew what he was talking about as the filly romped away from her opponents in the stretch to win by three lengths and to cover the fiveeighths in lOOs which was very fast considering the track was still dead from Mondays rain ¬ storm stormHaving Having gained first hand information about Black Helen Bradley is now regret ¬ ting that something wasnt done about nomi ¬ nating her for stakes She was not in a stake at Washington Park nor is she eligible for one at Arlington which is just too bad for the Colonel for Black Helen at this writing would be considered a cinch for the 35000 Lassie Stakes to be renewed a week from tomorrow She probably would have had plenty of engagements but for her size Bradley considered her too small to stand up under stake competition and she was not nominated for any However she should get her chance in late closing specials to be offered during the fall If Preeminent is not a good twoyearold then I havent got one Hal Price Headley said before the chestnut son of Supremus and Star Class went to the post in the first Arlington race Wednesday Preeminent was making his debut but he handled himself in race horse fashion to defeat several other promising maiden youngsters so Headley probably owns a smart youngster one that will be heard from in the big money class from now on Preeminent is in Saturdays running of the Hyde Park Stakes and also is eligible for the Arlington Futurity which will have about 45000 for the winner This promising Headley youngster has the physical makings of a good Tcolt being of fine size and rangy smart conformation and a proud bearing He was a trifle green in the paddock at the post and during the running of the race but he was away fast and moved into his stride and ran straight and true after he had headed for the wire The Kentucky breeder was elated over the colts performance and is not sure he will run him back Saturday in the Hyde Park although he has the Futurity definitely in mind Continued on seventeenth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF TURFContinued Continued from second page The wave of sickness which struck Long Island stables a couple of weeks ago ap ¬ pears to have passed on judging from the entries being made for the Aqueduct races Horsemen are happy to run for those 1000 purses when they have animals in condi ¬ tion to bear silks but when their horses are under the weather a million dollar purse wouldnt tempt the greatest percentage of them The writer knows of one owner who gives a horse special bottled spring water for which he pays 50 cents a gallon and the horse requires ten gallons a day The owner started the horse on this special water to break up a chronic case of colic and although the thoroughbred has long since been cured he still gets the special water He is earning the water too by the way Clyde Van Dusen has decided that a rest will do Mata Hari no harm which is not surprising as Dixianas speedy filly has had plenty of campaigning and train riding so far this season and there is little prospect of her winning anything important until the autumn Van Dusen has found out beyond any doubt that Mata Hari cant go against the crack threeyearold colts at a mile and a quarter so running her in the Classic would be a waste of time As there are no filly events of any consequence on the sched ¬ ule for next month the Dixiana trainer acted wisely in taking advantage of the chance to freshen up the daughter of Peter Hastings and War Woman WomanMata Mata Hari proved last year in the fall after she had been out of competition for a month or so that she was hard to beat and she may do the same this autumn Although she probably will never be able to beat a good field at a mile and onequarter the Dixiana filly might turn on in a race like the Potomac Handicap at Havre de Grace which is at a mile and onesixteenth such speed that her opponents would be unable to catch her Sooner or later she is going to clash with another speedy threeyearold or class and the sparks will fly flySomebody Somebody not connected with the manage ¬ ment of Sportsmans Park has been trying to sell the half mile Chicago track but he has not been very successful except to cause promoters like Joseph Cattarinich a lot of bother in denying the purchase Eddie OHare manager of Sportsmans also has been compelled to take time out and deny that the track had been sold or that nego ¬ tiations had been conducted Plans are go ¬ ing ahead for the October meeting at the halfmile track and some persons well versed in race track management say it will be successful with a compulsory cash gate
