GOOD PROGRAM AT AQUEDUCT Thursday Takes Measure of Faireno in Lawrence Handicap Coucci Pilots Burch Colorbearer to Victory Discovery Shows Fine Speed in Fourth NEW YORK N T June 28 Selby L Burchs useful campaigner Thursday was winner of the Lawrence Handicap at Aque ¬ duct today over a good band in handy fash ¬ ion Second place went to Mrs Thomas E Proctor Jrs Chatmoss with William Woodwards Faireno beating his stablemate Jovius for third The only other starter was Bahadur which carried the silks of the Maemere Farm Stable StableIt It was an excellent card offered by the Queens County Jockey Club in fact one of the best of the meeting The weather conditions were all that could have been desired and an excellent attendance was again out for the sport sportThursday Thursday caused some delay at the post in the feature but the start was a good one Bahadur being first to show the way Faireno was right after the threeyearold and while Coucci got Thursday away in the first flight he was on the inside and when unable to keep step with the early leaders he was soon in close quarters and shuffled back until for an instant he was last lastBahadur Bahadur stepped right along in the lead but Faireno was right with him and then as Thursday dropped back Chatmoss moved into third place Coucci had been forced to take up and move to the outside with Thursday and it cost some ground Then Faireno caught Bahadur to take command but Coucci with clear sailing for Thursday moved up rapidly on the outside until in the stretch he had the Burch gelding in second place placeHe He steadily drew up on Faireno until Kurtsinger was forced to a drive but Thursday was just beginning to run and he was past to gallop home the winner by four lengths Chatmoss in the meantime was closing with determination after hav ¬ ing met with some interference and he also ran past the tiring Faireno to beat him two lengths for second place placeAlfred Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Discovery which has been chasing Cavalcade home in many of the triumphs of the English colt had no Cavalcade to beat in the Clover Purse and made a show of the smartest band of sprinters that could be mustered against him He also showed the fastest seveneighths race of the meeting when he ran in 123 to gallop home before William Woodwards Fleam and the Maemere Farm Stables Somebody took third from Swift sport sportIt It was a race confined to the threeyear olds and seven went to the post Little time was lost in the stalls and as they left Jones rushed out with Only One to set a sizzling pace He ran a first quarter in 23 and reached the half mile in 46 but Discovery was matching that speed when he went right after the son of Lucil lite and it was soon apparent he could go to askingSpeedmore the lead at the first asking Speedmore did not last long in third place and then Fleam moved up to head the others but she was three lengths back of the leading pair and Only One was soon showing signs of distress as he attempted to go with Discovery Bejshak did not ask Discovery to run seriously until turn ¬ ing into the stretch and there took the lead with ridiculous ease He drew away with every stride to cross the line in hand winner lengthsThere by half a dozen lengths There came a disqualification in the third race another five furlong dash for two yearolds when the Dorwood Stables High Hand II after finishing second to A C Schwartz Little Lie was set back for having fouled the Howe Stables Aperitif By the ruling Aperitif was moved into second place and third was awarded to S R Rosoffs Col Greene GreeneLittle Little Lie was the only one in the field that did not suffer when Sammy Renick came over sharply with High Hand II right after the break and was clear when the foul ¬ ing occurred and it was a considerable aid to her victory Hunter rushed the daughter of Sickle right along all the way and she was over the line the winner by half a length lengthHigh High Hand II after her sharp swerve bore out and then in to finish on the rail to be beaten only half a length Aperitif which lost considerable ground due to the fouling raced along in third place but hung badly under the drive to be beaten three lengths by High Hand II Col Greene and Canterboy which closed as named fighting it out for third
