LEADS FROM START TO FINISH Mrs J H Whitneys Brown Witch Scores HardEarned Victory Versailles Purse Tops Program at Latonia Hot Weather Has Effect on Days DaysAttendance Attendance LATONIA Ky June 28 Mrs J H Whit ¬ neys Brown Witch scored a hardearned vic ¬ tory in the Versailles Purse which head ¬ lined Thursdays program at Latonia The threeyearold by Brown Bud and Appari ¬ tion set her own pace a fast one and with ¬ stood pressure from D Taylor throughout to finally win by a length I Pass was sec ¬ ond and Sallie Gray third in the field of six The other starters were Cactus R ose the favorite Our Sammy and Ridge Mor I Pass beat Sallie Gray by a nose for second place placeBrown Brown Witch met and subdued three dif ¬ ferent challenges during the six furlongs First she raced Cactus Rose into submis ¬ sion then ran the heart out of Ridge Mor which momentarily headed her and finally stood off the bold lastminute rush of I Pass PassI I Pass raced in last position to the eighth post where he raced past the others and all but caught the winner Sallie Gray ran an even race to be third thirdBrown Brown Witchs time for the six furlongs was 113 and she paid 15 for 2 in the mu tuels tuelsSallie Sallie Gray Mrs W E Smiths Latonia Derby eligible worked but an additional half mile after completing the six furlongs journey in preparation for Saturdays fix ¬ ture She was timed the mile in 142 and the mile and a quarter in 211 211The The weather was again miserably hot which might have had something to do with a slight falling off in patronage The track was fast fastJones Jones McCoys Amazement a twoyear old filly by Blind Play and Embarrass proved much the best in the opening dash of five furlongs She won the race by near ¬ ly three lengths and came from last place to accomplish the feat featOvercoming Overcoming interference at the halfmile pole Amazement gained on the leaders on the upper turn and when straightened out for the run to the stand literally mowed down her opposition to win off by herself Gobet was second while Golden Throne fin ¬ ished third thirdParr Parr Boy set the pace to the stretch where he tired The winner was ridden by L Canfield CanfieldC C Pulley colored apprentice under con ¬ tract to F P Letellier rode the first win ¬ ner of his career in the second race when he piloted Marie Jean home over a mediocre band Byphar was second and Little Bub ¬ bles third thirdAway Away with the leaders Marie Jean was in the thick of contention all the way and after racing Abdel into submission in the stretch had enough left to outfinish Byphar and win by a head Little Bubbles finished four lengths farther back a head in front of Highest Point The field was held at the post eleven and a half minutes by the frac ¬ tious behavior of Cousin Bess Byphar and Morning Fair all three breaking from out ¬ side the stalls stallsThe The third race which brought together eleven maiden twoyearolds was run in slow time with Too Busy the well backed favorite ambling over the five and a half furlongs in 110 over a fast track to win winA A length behind the winner came Idle wild while a half length still farther back was Johnny O in third place Johnny O set the slow pace but at the head of the stretch Too Busy took command and held sway to the end Idlewild came from far back to get second money while Johnny O held on gamely after relinquishing the lead to be third
