MRS P A B WIDENERS DNIEPER JUVENILE STAKES WINNER STAKES FIRST RUNNING Gelded Son of Kiev Earns 6880 at Washington Park Bloodroot First Count Arthur Sec ¬ ond and Black Helen Third in Derby Trial HOMEWOOD 111 June 15 Dnieper gelded son of Kiev and Nerva owned by Mrs P A B Widener of Philadelphia de ¬ feated nineteen other twoyearolds in the first running of the Washington Park Juve ¬ nile Stakes which featured todays fine program at the local course courseComing Coming from the middle of the pack on the outside in the final three furlongs of the five and onehalf furlongs dash to which 5000 was added Dnieper scored going away by a length and a quarter over Mrs Ed ¬ ward Haughtons Black Highbrow Dixi anas Erin Torch was third a length farther away and a nose in advance of C V Whit ¬ neys Two Bob Dnieper earned 6880 by his victory and he ran the distance in 106 He carried 119 pounds and was rid ¬ den by Harold Tinker With good weather prevailing another fine crowd was present for the days sport Black Highbrow received the bulk of the publics support but Dnieper was well backed in view of his recent clean cut tri ¬ umph here and his generally good record recordStarter Starter Roy Dickerson experienced much trouble in lining up the bulky field es ¬ pecially as the Bahr starting gate could not be used and the horses were placed in front of the apparatus However a good start was effected although the delay was thirteen and onehalf minutes minutesSHOWS SHOWS MOST EARLY SPEED SPEEDKentucky Kentucky Blues breaking from the inside position showed the most early speed but he was soon joined by Black Highbrow and the latter went to the front nearing the stretch In the meantime Dnieper had worked his way up steadily on the outside and he overtook Black Highbrow entering the final furlong Putting the favorite away in a short but brisk tussle the Widener gelding steadily drew away Black High ¬ brow had no trouble saving second honors while Erin Torch just managed to save third honors honorsErin Erin Torch had always been close up to the early leaders while Two Bob was away slowly and came from far back to be a strong finishing fourth Microbe was shuf ¬ fled back right after the start while Ceiling was caught in close quarters at the far turn Several of the others also were jammed about in the large field but everything con ¬ sidered the race was well run runFortunate Fortunate to save ground throughout the entire race especially through the stretch where the leaders went wide the Eskay Sta ¬ bles Sweeping Light scored his first victory of the season by accounting for the Des Plaines Purse the fourth event The vet ¬ eran son of Manna ridden by Buddy Haas defeated Mrs John Hertz Watch Him by a half length while L T Whitehills Royal Blunder was third a head farther away Evergold and Debs Delight completed the field fieldFIELD FIELD WELL BUNCHED BUNCHEDThe The field was well bunched until after reaching the stretch with Debs Delight hav ¬ ing the most speed closely followed by Evergold Sweeping Light was held under restraint around the turn but when the field went wide and Debs Delight dropped back he was sent up under punishment by Haas but had to be vigorously ridden all through the stretch to wrest the lead entering the final sixteenth and hold it against Watch Him and Royal Blunder which had disposed of Evergold Royal Blunder 137 137More More interest was displayed by the large crowd in the Prospect Purse carded as the sixth event than in the stake because it brought together seven leading candidates for next Saturdays running of the Ameri ¬ can Derby A splendid race and close finish resulted with E R Bradleys Bloodroot and Black Helen installed at oddson finishing first and third being split by Mrs John Hertz Count Arthur They were heads apart at the end of the mile and seventy yards which was run in 141 onefifth slower than the track record recordBloodroot Bloodroot undoubtedly was best of the field and might have won by a larger mar ¬ gin had she not been ridden by Buddy Haas in a manner to aid Black Helens chances The daughter of Blue Larkspur and Knockaney Bridge held iii hand to permit Black Helen to win the Coaching Club American Oaks came to the latters rescue in the final sixteenth when Count Arthur forged up on the outside and wrest ¬ ed the lead from the speedy Black Helen The two Bradley fillies dominated the race from the start with Black Helen show ing the most early speed Approaching the far turn Bloodroot ranged alongside her stablemate on the inside and Haas had diffi ¬ culty in keeping her back Whiskolo was in third place on the back stretch while Count Arthur and Blue Armor were next in line Nellie Flag and Tearout completing the field fieldIn In the run around the turn Count Arthur began to move up although compelled to lose some ground by being on the inside Haas evidently did not see the Hertz colt advancing as he continued to hold back Bloodroot to permit Black Helen to keep in the lead but passing the furlong post Count Arthur had taken a slight lead and he had to call on his mount Black Helen gave all she had to stave off Count Arthurs bid and she made a good job of it although it was not quite good enough but Haas called on Bloodroot and the latter slowly but steadily gained on the two leaders to slip through on the inside of them to gain the victory in the final few yards yardsBloodroot Bloodroot continued on out to a mile and a furlong being timed for the full distance in 150 Both Bradley fillies carried 121 pounds to 112 for Count Arthur thus giv ¬ ing the latter fourteen pounds on the scale The defeat of Black Helen was her first this season in five starts Last year she scored in seven out of nine In view of their good efforts today the Bradley fillies are expected to rule favorite in the Derby next Saturday
