Identify saved the day for Alfred G Vanderbilt when he drove to vic ¬ tory in the Rockingham Park Handicap at the local course this afternoon His more highly regarded stable companion Dis ¬ covery finished in third place a head behind J W Y Martins Dark Hope At the finish the son of Man o War and Footprint was three lengths in advance of the runnerup in what was his third stake triumph of the meeting and his fourth of 1935 Over a greasy and slippery track due to heavy rains shortly after the noon hour the four yearold ran the distance in 112 to win with something to spare spareThe The victory added 7370 to his not in ¬ considerable earnings earlier in the season and from a monetary standpoint was the most important of all The score easily was the most popular with the crowd which first page the pair paid more for show than for straight showing 29 to 20 20Eleven Eleven started in the Rockingham Park Handicap but it was little more than a one horse contest all the way Skinny Fal lon now riding in superb form had Identify away fast and sent him to the front before fifty yards had been completed He sent the son of Man o War off to a clear lead as the field raced past the stand and then rated him along cleverly until a quarter of a mile from the finish At this point Dark Hope appeared a threat and Fallon bore dovyn vigorously on Identify to dispose of the bid of the Traumer gelding before the sixteenth post had been reached From that marker the Vanderbilt racer had no opposition oppositionIdentify Identify was the best claim of 1934 judg ¬ ing by his record thus far He has earned 17935 this season chiefly through victories in the Toboggan Handicap Granite State Handicap White Mountain Handicap and todays stake stakeDark Dark Hope whose two previous races were excellent proved the only one to threaten the winners supremacy Winters sent him along smartly once the back stretch was reached to gain a position within striking distance of the leader Making the turn he gained on the big brown gelding and as they turned for home it appeared that he might overhaul Identify At the head of the stretch Winters went to work with the whip but his charge was unable to gain any con ¬ siderable ground on the winner and in the last hundred yards he was tiring badly badlyDiscovery Discovery had no excuse Bejshak saved ground on the inside all the way hustling the son of Display vigorously The four yearold showed a flash of speed which car ¬ ried him into second place as they turned out of the back stretch and the cry of here comes Discovery went up from thousands of throats It was just a flash however for the Vanderbilt star could not improve his position thereafter and missed second by a scant margin marginVicar Vicar was in second place in the run to and around the first turn but dropped back to fourth place on the far side There he remained to the end War Glory was well up early but tired after five furlongs and came out of the race lame Our
