SHIFTS TO THISTLE DOWN Racing Moves From Bainbridge Park to Other Cleveland Track Inaugural Handicap Feature of Mondays MondaysOpening Opening Program Ohio Derby Reserved Reservedfor for July 6 Final Day of Meeting CLEVELAND Ohio June 15 Thistle Down Clevelands million dollar mile course formally inaugurates its summer season with a snappy eighteenday meeting beginning Monday June 17 to July 6 One of the high ¬ lights of the meeting will be the Ohio Derby 6000 added to be run on the final day of the meeting which wiU culminate a brilliant early season of sport sportThe The opening card which features the This ¬ tle Down Inaugural Handicap at six fur ¬ longs is expected to bring out such stellar performers as Irenes Bob Wbodlander Pes ¬ tle Herowin Sweep Xike Clang Moratorium and other handicap stars now in the Cleve ¬ land sector The supporting card is a strong one as arranged by racing secretary Richard A Leigh comprising seven races the first starting at 230 p m mThistle Thistle Down always has attracted the elite of Cleveland and its environs because of its nearness to the metropolis One of the salient lures of the meeting which was inaugurated last year by general manager Robert S Eddy Jr featured la clubhouse membership by invitation only and this proved most attractive to the sport business and civic leaders of Cleveland The mem ¬ bership comprised some of the outstanding business and social luminaries of this sec ¬ tion and much favorable comment was heard both from a racing and social viewpoint Staging viewpointStaging of the Ohio Derby at Thistle Down will be the first time this classy threeyear old event has been staged at the Warrens ville course The first Derby was won by Black Gold in 1924 when the meeting was then staged at Maple Heights This was continued up to 1928 when it vas shifted to Bainbridge This year because of Thistle Downs close proximity to Cleveland and the fact the Ohio Derby is being renewed for the first time since Economic won the event in 1932 it is expected the classic will lend real color to the Cleveland racing season Some of the countrys outstanding three yearolds already have been nominated in ¬ cluding Roman Soldier Sun Portland Blue Armor Moratorium McCarthy Dark Wo ¬ man Clang Pestle and others Racing sec ¬ retary Leigh said the nominations will close on June 27 and by that time he anticipates some twentyfive nominations will be in hand handLast Last years Thistle Down meeting was fea ¬ tured with a spirited jockey contest when Freddie Smith won the title over a classy hand of pigskin artists including Hank Manifold who was a toprate apprentice This year with such riders as Leonard Tur ¬ ner Robert Tilden Joe Dyer Hoberl Clem ons and others competing the race is ex ¬ pected to be equally as close as that of the previous season Some 550 horses are now quartered on the grounds The course has been given a thorough renovating and is already gnoted for its splendid cushion The track proper is in the finest shape of Thistle Downs history There will be Ladies Days twice a week Mondays and Fridays one of the features of last season The post time has been moved to 230 p m for the convenience of Cleveland and outoftown fans fansPerhaps Perhaps one of the biggest attractions for the sportloving as well as vacation fans will be the Derby coming as it does on July 6 This will be on the Saturday before tKe playing of the allstar major league game on Monday at Cleveland Stadium Fans will be flocking in here from all partg of the country and will have an advantage of see ¬ ing the Derby spending Sunday in Cleveland and seeing the baseball game on Monday It should provide an excellent holiday for all concerned
