SINGING WOOD VICTORIOUS Gallops ThreeQuarters Over Aque ¬ duct Track in Fast Time Finishes in 111 Despite Poor Track Condi ¬ tions Threatens Track Record Box thorn Finishes Second NEW YORK N Yf June 19 Singing Wood which carries the silks of Mrs John Hay Whitney won his first race of the year when he scored in the Flying Heels Purse a condition sprint feature at Aqueduct to ¬ day It was an esy score and he was fol ¬ lowed past the line by Edward R Bradleys Boxthorn which was making his first ap ¬ pearance since the running of the Preak ness Third was the portion of Victor Emanuels Miss Merriment and the only other starter was Mrs C Oliver Iselins Ex ¬ hibit hibitIt It was another miserable day for the sport with unseasonably cold weather and fre ¬ quent rain falls during the afternoon This naturally had its effect on attendance and the crowd was the smallest of the meeting But the horses raced through the sloppy going brilliantly when the feature sprint over six furlongs was run in 111 just a fifth of a second slower than the track record recordWith With a slight delay at the post caused by the actions of Exhibit the start was a good one and Don Meade sent Boxthorn out to show the way setting a sizzling pace Singing Wood went with him and then came Miss Merriment but Singing Wood soon dropped back as Wright steadied him and Boxthorn and Miss Merriment going stride for stride reached the half in 46 46Exhibit Exhibit headed Singing Wood and going to the stretch turn the son of Royal Min ¬ strel was last of the four and for the moment he appeared beaten Boxthorn and Miss Merriment were setting the terrific pace and then Walker who had the mount on Miss Merriment called on her in earnest and she opened up a lead of two lengths on Boxthorn At that time Singing Wood was still last and seemed beaten but Wright had not asked the son of Royal Minstrel to do his best bestWaiting Waiting until he had turned into the stretch Wright made his move and Singing Wood proved his class by quickly catching the flying leaders to be home an easy win ¬ ner by four lengths Miss Merriment col ¬ lapsed as a result of her early exertions and Boxthorn beat her five lengths for second place with Exhibit finishing right at her heels heelsThe The hurdle race of the day at a mile and a half under selling conditions brought a battling finish with the amateur C R White tiding Mrs T W Durants Little Woman the winner over Mrs Gwladys Whit ¬ neys Clotho ridden by another amateur J N Theodore Closely after the pair came H R Bains Galyarrow with the profes ¬ sional A Bauman in the saddle saddleClotho Clotho was in a more amiable mood than in his previous races which he won after a deal of driving and he dashed away cheer ¬ fully with the result that he and Jungle Dawn were soon showing the way and rac ¬ ing closely lapped Mr White followed them with Little Woman and these were the three to dominate all the running though in the run home Jungle Dawn quit so badly he was run down by Galyarrow to lose third thirdAround Around the lower end of the course and into the back field there was some bumping between Jungle Dawn and Clotho and the Greentree jumper appeared to suffer most as he dropped back while Clotho went into the lead In the meantime Little Woman was closing on the pair of them and when the head of the stretch was reached she had raced by Jungle Dawn to be in second place placeLittle Little Woman continued to close under a vigorous drive while Clotho swerved under the whip Thus it was that at the final hurdle Little Woman had her head in front and finishing with excellent courage and under an excellent ride was winner by half a length Galyarrow had come with a great burst of speed in the final quarter after be ¬ ing well back of the pace and was lapped on Clotho at the end to beat Jungle Dawn by four lengths for third thirdJames James N Crofton California racing exec ¬ utive was a visitor
