VALE VICTORIANS WOODWARD STAKES Speed Second and Ste Louise Third in Juvenile Feature at Detroit Dunbar Provides Outstanding Sur ¬ prise in Fourth Jerry S a Winner DETROIT Mich June 19 The stable of Mrs Silas B Mason Kentucky and New York sportswoman which has played an important part in Detroit racing since it arrived here little more than a week ago added another stake to its steadily increasing list of achievements when Vale Victorian was an easy winner of the 5000 added Woodward Stakes that featured the midweek program here this afternoon The son of the dead Victorian and named in his honor reached the end of the five furlongs four lengths before Alfred G Vanderbilts Speed which beat Mrs C R Cranes lightly regarded Ste Louise a half of a length for second Grand GrandSlam Slam double stakes winner under the Bomar Stable colors and an 8 to 5 choice was fourth a length back of Ste Louise and a head before Black Highbrow which was much the best of Postage Due a stablemate of Speed Plunge Home Beauf lower San tan Couleedam a stablemate of the winner and v Outremont which trailed the leaders in the order named namedCharles Charles Kurtsinger received the best of the breaks with the winner On the inside where the best footing of the heavy track prevailed he drove Vale Victorian into a good lead before reaching the far turn and after nursing him along to the stretch he permitted him to draw away to earn the 4270 which was the winners share Under 113 pounds five less than Grand Slam the top weight of the field carried Vale Vic ¬ torian ran the dash in 101 vithin two sec ¬ onds of the track record and wonderful time considering the track conditions conditionsWhile While the Mason colt and Speed which followed in closest pursuit from the start received some breaks Grand Slam was not so fortunate He was the last in motion and was forced io the outside of the field of eleven for room Turning into the stretch Eddie Legere guided him through and Grand Slam was overtaking the leaders rapidly when the finish was reached reachedDuring During the opening threeeighths Plunge Home showed the way to the others but en ¬ tering the stretch she gave way rapidly to be well beaten at the end Santan which alternated with Ste Louise at holding fourth fourthj j position for nearly half a mile quit badly during the drive Postage Due was the real Royal Purchase to be well in hand at the end Jean Brown slight favorite over Fortunate Youth worked her way forward steadily to be much the best of the others at the finish finishRacing Racing back to her last good effort R Ryans Bereit a maiden daughter of On Watch provided a mild surprise when she got up to beat the Northland Stables Emer J by a nose at the end of the five furlongs dash that opened the program Imperial Bill was third three parts of ar length in the wake of Emer J and four lengths before Bon Shot which was much the best of five Other juveniles that met under claiming conditions conditionsHarry Harry Hart saddled his first winner of the meeting when Leo J Marks Merely signalled his return to competition by lead ¬ ing Porter Call Grace Bunting and six others to the finish of the six furlongs sprint that served as the second race Well handled by Hilton Dabsorx and saved while following in closest pursuit of the pacemak ing and favored Grace Bunting the winner took command entering the stretch to reach the finish six lengths before Porter Call The latter got up to head the tiring Grace Bunting which lasted to beat Amy Cooper by a nose for minor honors honorsAnother Another favorite was turned back when Nell Kuhlman finished second to Star Buck lands Ladino at the end of the third race Frisco was third thirdSlightly Slightly benefited when the pacemaking Pretty Monk bore out leaving the back stretch Ladino which had the services of Glen Smith drove past Frisco near the final threeeighths and responding to strong urg ¬ ing in the stretch was two and a half lengths before Nell Kuhlman at the end The latter outrun to the stretch finished strong to beat the tiring Frisco by a neck at the end endDr Dr Charles MacArthur who purchased Rhodius
