Notables in Tremendous Crowd at Louisville for 63rd Kentucky Derby Edward J Fry newlyappointed racing commissioner for Michigan and Claude Mar kel director of public relations for the Wol ¬ verine State headed a big delegation that arrived Saturday morning Mr Fry also is chairman of the Michigan State Central Executive Committee of the Democratic party and visited with PostmasterGeneral James A Farley and Gov A B Chandler ChandlerWindows Windows for the sale of mutuel tickets on the Derby were opened at 9 oclock and speculation on the race began immediately In less than an hour queues of holiday length were lined up at each of the windows and they grew hourly in size sizeAlbert Albert Cummins assistant managing editor of Chicago Daily Racing Form and Mrs Cummins motored here from the Windy City and were clubhouse visitors visitorsAll All of the members of the Kentucky Rac ¬ ing Commission were present Former Sen ¬ ator Johnson N Camden chairman who came from his home at Paris Ky enter ¬ tained a large party and Stephen Sewell Combs who resides in Lexington and Polk Laffoon of Covington also were hosts to many friends Charles L Groan who has been in ailing health took advantage of the splendid weather and with vicechairman W E Smith also a resident of Louisville greeted the other members Tom Rush Un ¬ derwood secretary and Miss Louise Wilson assistant secretary motored from Lexington LexingtonDaniel Daniel Seism sports editor of the Evans ville Courier who has been covering the races at Dade Park for many years wit ¬ nessed his first Kentucky Derby DerbyEddy Eddy Yager Covington Ky lad who is one of the leading eastern riders had his first Derby mount on Sir Damion Yager was developed by C H Pat Knebelkamp and started his career at Churchill Downs DownsKirby Kirby Ramsey arrived from New York with four horses and found quarters at Douglas Park ParkPaul Paul Snyder who is in charge of the large crew of Western Union telegraphers at Churchill Downs witnessed his thirtyfifth Kentucky Derby Saturday Snyder said six operators handled the copy when Alana Dale carried the late Maj Thomas C Mc ¬ Dowells white and black colors to victory in the 1902 renewal and Saturday fortyfour Western Union wires flashed the winner to the four corners of the globe An equal number of Postal Telegraph and private wires also were used to handle the vast volume of copy filed by 100 or more cor ¬ respondents respondentsAlthough Although he led the riders at Churchill Downs in 1933 incidentally the year he rode 301 winners and in 1935 when he was under contract to Ben Jones Jack Westrope had his biggest thrill Saturday when he had his first Derby mount The Baker Mont youth handled Col Maxwell Howards Fencing and would have been astride Gerald if injury had not prevented the Mrs W H Furst colt from being under colors Westrope has had a colorful career He won with his first mount at Oriental Park in 1933 and went on to win 301 races that year the greatest number since Vincent Powers rode 324 winners in 1908 1908William William H Shelley Harry Lindenberger and Larry C Bogenschutz served as placing judges for the big race Judge Shelley dean of the trio placed Pink Star first in 1907 He missed the golden jubilee Derby won by Black Gold in 1924 and ill health prevented him from flashing the number of Cavalcade ten years later laterAlthough Although he has been a member of the Churchill Downs official family for many years judge Lindenberger did not serve as a Derby placing judge until last year Bogen schutz also a veteran official in point of service acted for the first time Saturday He has served at Washington Park Lincoln Fields and Latonia since 1928 1928Sherman Sherman St Clair assistant track superin ¬ tendent at Lincoln Fields is here assisting Tom Young He returns to Lincoln Fields Sunday where many improvements are un ¬ der way wayCol Col Thomas J Johnson head of the re ¬ mount service of the United States army came here from Washington for the Derby in a plane piloted by Col H C Kress KressJames James J Walker former mayor of New York viewed his first Derby in several years yearsCol Col Seymour Weiss Louisiana political power headed a large party that joined that of PostmasterGeneral James E Farley and other Washington notables at the track
