NOTED BREEDERS AT DERBY Veteran J H Morris Who Wit nessed First Running Present A B Hancock S M Look H B Scott ScottJ J W Mann and Others Seen at atChurchill Churchill Downs LOUISVILLE Ky May 8 John H Mprr ris owner of Bosque Bonita Farm in Wood ford County who has seen all but two or three renewals of the Kentucky Derby headed the list of thoroughbred breeders who came over from Lexington and other Blue Grass towns Like Col Matt J Winn Mr Morris saw the first running of the famous race in 1875 and gives a detailed account of Aristides victory The venerable Woodford County horseman goes even far ¬ ther back than the first Kentucky Derby recalling many of the famous races that preceded the Churchill Downs feature featureArthur Arthur Hancock master of Claiborne Stud in Bourbon County from whence came William M Woodwards Derby winners Gallant Fox and Omaha was host to a party Thomas Piatt owner of Brookdale Farm and a wellknown Kentucky breeder arrived at the track early and was joined later by his son Thomas Carr Piatt owner of Crestwood Farm and also a thorough ¬ bred breeder breederFAMOUS FAMOUS CASTLETON STUD STUDSamuel Samuel M Look who now is breeding thoroughbreds at Castleton Stud which was established by the late James R Keene arrived with a party of young Lexington friends Brownell Combs who with his father operates the Belair Farm saw the running of the race as did his brother Lucas B Combs who also is a breeder breederHarrie Harrie B Scott manager of Samuel D Riddles Faraway Farm who nursed War Admiral through his infancy and Mrs Scott were hosts to a party in their box boxJohn John Wesley Marr at whose Clarkland Farm the young stallion Mate a starter in the 1931 Kentucky Derby stands drove over from Lexington Practically the entire staff of Keeneland Association at Lexington was present The list included Hal Price Headley president Augustus B Gay and Dr Fred W Rankin vicepresidents Brownell Combs secretary and W H Courtney treasurer treasurerMiss Miss Martha Lawson Brown assistant secretary and W T Bishop track superin ¬ tendent also were at the Downs DownsMr Mr and Mrs W E Hupp the former a thoroughbred breeder and owner brought over a party of friends J Edward Madden son of the late John E Madden on whose noted Hamburg Place near Lexington five Derby winners were foaled was the host to a Derby party partyMERRICK MERRICK PLACE OWNER OWNERJ J Cal Milam owner of Merrick Place and Merrick oldest living thoroughbred also was here Other Derby visitors included Dick McMahon manager of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm Thomas B Scott former general manager of the Old Ken ¬ tucky Association track at Lexington Frazer Le Bus former member of the Ken ¬ tucky State Racing Commission CommissionMiss Miss Daysie Proctor manager of Jos E Wideners Elmendorff Farm was hostess to a box party as was M Louise Wilson as ¬ sistant secretary of the state racing com ¬ mission Col W V Thraves and his daugh ¬ ter Mrs Catherine Maxwell entertained a box of friends Miss Elizabeth Daingerfield owner of Haylands Farm near Lexington I was here with her niece and nephew Miss Mary Daingerfield and Keene Daingerfield Jr The former is following in her aunts footsteps as a breeder while Keene Dainger ¬ field Jr is an owner and trainer James C I Stone who headed the R F C under former President Herbert Hoover and who now is racing a stable of horses also was here
