8 Buckley M Byers Thorson the fiveyearold son of Son o Battle and Axenbroom ran one of the best races of his career at Jamaica today when in a gamely fought out battle he scored in the Excelsior Handicap adding 6950 to his earnings Closely lapped on him as he swept over the line was Memory Book from the Greentree Stable and third went to Hal Price Headleys Whopper the top weight under the crushing burden of 127 pounds Mrs John Hertz Our Reigh was a close fourth and the only other starters were William Woodwards Isolater and the Maemere Farms Maeriel to follow in the order named namedThis This was the closing feature of the most successful meeting ever enjoyed by the Metropolitan Jockey Club and while it was a drab day and the racing conducted under thick clouds another immense crowd thronged the park parkWHOPPER WHOPPER LOSES GROUND GROUNDWith With little delay at the post in the Ex ¬ celsior the six engaged left in good align ¬ ment but when Whopper was not right with the leaders he had to lose some ground on the first turn Gilbert rushed him around as Our Reigh was showing the way until the big fellow had taken command in the back stretch It was an unusual use of his speed so early in the running and unques ¬ tionably had much to do with his defeat defeatCutting Cutting out pace under the 127 pounds the son of Pharamond III was still show ¬ ing the way as he rounded into the short stretch but it was evident the use of his speed in the early racing had taken some toll and he does not race as cheerfully when In front Ray had been rating Thorson along within striking distance and as Our Reigh tired the old fellow moved into second place while at the same time Memory Book was charging up outside the pair of them themWhen When put to a drive Whopper fought along gamely but inside the last sixteenth he began to weaken and just as Thorson headed him Memory Book joined seriously in the fight The Greentree colt was clos ¬ ing with every stride but he could not quite reach Thorson whose winning margin was a head while the badly ridden Whopper was another length away Our Reigh was close after the Headley horse while Isolater and Maeriel were both well beaten beatenROSEDALE ROSEDALE TO INHALE INHALEJohn John Hay Whitneys Inhale the swiftrun ¬ ning juvenile daughter of The Porter and Fatima II which had a seasoning in Cal ¬ ifornia during the winter was a galloping winner of the Rosedale Stakes in the track record time of 58 for the five furlongs She was in hand virtually all the way and could readily have clipped something off the mark which was made by the filly Out ¬ line in 1923 This race added 3800 to Inhales winning column and it was her second victory of the meeting There really was nothing to the running for in the first furlong Inhale had gone into a lead of two lengths and Johnny Gilbert had a steadying hold of her head as she stepped a fast quarter in 23 and went to the half mile ground in 46 All through the stretch he was easing the filly up and looking back to have her winner by six lengths It was the second winning mount for Gilbert he having brought Evening Hour home in the second race raceJoseph Joseph M Roeblings Invoke was as easily second best for she was second all through the running with no chance to run the winner down Her margin for the place was another six lengths and there came a battle for third with Fooled from the Wheatley Stable just hosing out Miyako for that part of the prize PAPA JACK IMPROVES Matt Brady added blinkers to the equip ¬ ment of William Ziegler Jrs Papa Jack invthe opening five furlongs dash for juve ¬ niles and it made a marked difference in his racing when he jumped into ail early lead arid led from end to end to win with some thing to spare over John Hay Whitneys Room Service which was just up to earn the place by a nose over Joseph M Roeb ¬ lings Detonation with M esun finishing fourth It took a photograph to decide the place placeA A close fit marked the six furlongs of the second race when Mrs C E Coates Eve ¬ ning Hour A E Webbers Count Rae and John Simonettis Free Again swept over the line closely locked in the order named with Lucky Jean taking fourth from Red John JohnFree Free Again breaking well wrs rushed in ¬ to a clear lead and lie looked all over the winner until inside the final furlong where he tired badly as both Evening Hour and Count Rae charged up outside of him Right at the end Gilbert outrode Ray to have Evening Hour drop her nose down in front while Count Rae had taken the place from Free Again by a head headMatt Matt Brady saddled his second winner of the day when he sent out Mrs William Ziegler Jrs filly Gold Mesh in the third a six furlongs dash for those of Class C in the graded handicaps The daughter of Polydor had all the speed to dominate the running from the break There was another call for the camera to decide that J J Jlorans Merry Pete was just up to take the place from Mrs L H Nimkoffs Beef ¬ steak steakin in a day marked by close finishes there came another in the mile and a sixteenth of the sixth when J D Norris Sandy Boot and George McMitchells Round Table were over the line in the same stride and the photo ¬ graph proclaimed Sandy Boot winner giv ¬ ing Willie Ray his third score of the after ¬ noon for he had won easily with Papa Jack and Thorson Round Table had caused some delfy t the gptAbjjisspn of his unruly ac ¬ tions and he was banished to a position put side the stalls before the start was possible At the end of the card Joe W Browns Fitter Pat scored over a big field that raced a mile and a sixteenth Madonna racing for Mrs Ethel D Jacobs took the place after having cut out all the pace and Miss Dignity was third before Glittering which
