Here and There on the Turf New Pimlico Grandstand Likely LikelyCalumet Calumet Dick Takes Dixie Handicap HandicapJamaicas Jamaicas Meeting Best in History HistoryAraho Araho Stars Maintain Fine Form Persons high in the management of Pim ¬ lico have been talking about a new grand ¬ stand for the traditional old course of the Maryland Jockey Club and when the direc ¬ tors hold their meeting next month definite action may be forthcoming The club has just renewed the lease on the property for a tenyear term and with that transaction out of the way may feel that construction of a new stand would prove to be good business as well as fulfilling a longfelt want Be ¬ cause of the hill in the centerfield only a small number of persons can see the racing from the terrace and some of the Pimlico officials had in mind the removal of the obstruction but due to the necessity for a new stand it has been recommended that most of the expenditure for improvements be used for that purpose purposeSince Since Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt became a heavy stockholder in the Maryland Jockey Club and greatly interested in its operation a spirit of progressiveness has been created with which construction of a new stand is in line It is the general hope of Pimlicos di ¬ rectors that the Preakness can be made an even more important race than it is and that it will attract many more persons than the plant can accommodate at the present time Pimlico cannot begin to hold the same num ¬ ber which saw the Kentucky Derby but its principal sponsors hope to increase the ac ¬ commodations so a greater number can be attracted than the present limit of about 30000 persons Because Of its location within the Baltimore city limits and being surrounded by residential property Pimlico is lacking the room to expand as it should Stables are close together on three sides of the track and parking room is almost con spic uous by its absence Nevertheless pro ¬ gressiveness is in the air at Pimlico so do not be surprised if it has a new grandstand before the fall meeting meetingCalumet Calumet Dick which E K Bryson claimed for 2500 from Calumet Farm last summer has proven himself the handicap champion of Maryland this spring just as did Roman Soldier last fall The gelded son of Gallant Fox and Martha Snow now a fiveyearold added the Dixie Handicap to his list which already included victories in the Bowie and Southern Maryland Handicaps by defeating the best field he has been called upon to meet thus far this season Moving up with a rush through the final three furlongs Calumet Dick was aided in his drive for victory by swerving over in front of Aneroid but never ¬ theless he probably would have outgamed that speedy son of The Porter as well as Finance which held on to be second after setting a steady pace all the way With the conclusion of the Pimlico meeting Calumet Dick probably will head for Chicago with others in the stable to compete in the several important handicaps to be offered at Wash ¬ ington and Arlington Parks Continued on twentyeighth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page Jamaicas spring meeting of twentyone days which ended Saturday was the most successful in its history evidence enough that New York racing is in a more pros ¬ perous state than ever before Crowds which taxed Jamaicas capacity were present sev ¬ eral days particularly May 1 when the Wood Memorial Stakes was run The pres ¬ ence of Pompoon and other leading three yearolds in the field was the signal to bring about a crowd that caused the Metro ¬ politan Jockey Club plant to be inadequate A neat profit was made and the Jamaica directors may be expected to vote a share of It back into improvements which the plant could well use despite the important changes made since last fall The final days pro ¬ gram was productive of excellent sport with Thorson outgaming Memory Book and Whopper in the Excelsior Handicap as Inhale a daughter of The Porter and Fa tima II equalled the track record in cap ¬ turing the Rosedale Stakes She is a half sister to Hustle On which sold for 70000 as a yearling and never won a race raceThe The Araho Stable of Mrs Walter E OHara continues to cut a wide swath in early season racing Unable to create a rip ¬ ple in Florida wearers of the black and white spotted silks have taken numerous important events since the opening of Bowie the latest being the King Philip Han ¬ dicap at Narragansett Park in which Mrs OHaras New Deal and Mucho Gusto fin ¬ ished first and second The King Philip was Saturdays headliner at Narragansett Park which operated by the other half of the OHara family is enjoying a better season than ever before Its spring meeting of nine ¬ teen days passes the halfway mark tomor ¬ row and even though great crowds not only on Saturdays but during the week as well have patronized the Rhode Island course the best days are still ahead Prospects are exceptionally bright for the entire New England season judging by Narragansetts fine meeting so far
