PENNSYLVANIA BILL BEATEN Perennial Attempt to Legalize Pari Mutuels Fails Again in House of Representatives HARRISBURG Pa May 12 Pennsyl ¬ vanias perennial attempt to legalize pari mutuel racing was again a lost issue today after the house of representatives late yes ¬ terday defeated the Melchiorre bill by a vote of 126 to 68 68Prior Prior to the vote on the measure Repre ¬ sentative Melchiorre said he was confident of at least 115 votes in favor of the proposal but when the bill came up for final vote it received a definite defeat defeatOpposition Opposition included church forces rural legislators and certain business interests State Democratic Chairman David L Law ¬ rence was also actively opposed to the rac ¬ ing proposal Governor George H Earle remained lukewarm to the proposal and took no part in the legislative contest
