Here and There on he Turf Preeminent s Form Overlooked Pimlico Oaks Will Improve Over the Top doming West Mars Shield Is Oaks Favorite Belmont Park enjoyed a wonderful open Jng Monday continuing in the ratio of its importance as the outstanding track in the metropolitan area the fine success at Ja ¬ maica With fine weather the order the attendance was up considerably from that of the corresponding day last year while the sport was in keeping with Belmont tradi ¬ tion although Preeminent made something of a runaway of the Toboggan Handicap Those very astute persons responsible for the odds quoted on the horse running in New York did not attach much importance to Preeminents chances and the fine look ¬ ing son of Supremus was to be had at 10 to 1 after Whopper his mate in the Hal Price Headley stable had been declared as was generally expected because he had per ¬ formed in the Excelsior Handicap over a longer distance at Jamaica Saturday SaturdayUnquestionably Unquestionably Preeminents connections took some sort of advantage of the liberal odds because when Whopper was in the overnight field the entry appeared certain to rule the favorite The Supremus veteran had shown good enough speed in his work ¬ outs and in his two victorious efforts at Keeneland to have warranted backing with or without Whoppers presence but the New York odds makers discounted his form at the Lexington course as has been so often their custom in regards to horses coming from western tracks tracksIn In his very first start of the year Preemi ¬ nent defeated a good field of sprinters in the Phoenix Handicap Keenelands inaugu ¬ ral feature among them Count Morse which went on to account for the Ben Ali Handi ¬ cap at the same course and the Clark Hand ¬ icap at Churchill Downs In his next per ¬ formance he won an overnight handicap that supported the Blue Grass Stakes after which he was shipped to Belmont Park to join the division taken there by trainer Du val A Headley The field for the Pimlico Oaks Monday was not as imposing as has been the custom but the mile and one furlong event and the decision to revive the mile and one furlong event after it had been abandoned for five years came at such a late time that many trainers were unable to get their charges properly prepared Next year nominations to the Oaks will be closed at the same time as the Preakness Dixie and other Pimlico Stakes and no excuse will be forthcoming in this particular if a good field is not attracted attractedThe The revival was won by Sweet Desire from the Bomar Stable of Charles Bohn and Peter A Markey with a fine rush through the final half mile in which he ran down Lucky Pledge and Morning Sweet Desire is a chestnut daughter of Jean Valjean and Sweet Genevieve and was among the year ¬ lings which the Bomar Stable purchased pri ¬ vately from John Oliver Keene in 1935 For the past several years the Detroit sportsmen have been g ing to Keene for their young stock and h vr been fortunate in obtaining such capable performers as Grand Slam Bo HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page mar Siam and Gold Band as well as Sweet Desire Mrs William H Furst may have made a fortunate purchase in Over the Top from the Glen Riddle Farm even though the son of Man o War and Cresta may not win the Preakness Saturday The colt will be shipped to Louisville thence to Washington Park where he will Be prepared for the American Derby Latonia Derby and other important midwestern events for three yearolds and at this time it seems doubtful that War Admiral will be sent from the East for them Following his performance in the Preakness Saturday the Kentucky Derby winner will be pointed fon the Belmont Stakes after which it is to be expected that he will be given a vacation until the running of the Classic at Arlington Park which is to be decided during the latter part of July With both Gerald and Over the Top Mrs Furst will have a strong entry for the midwestern stakes stakesMrs Mrs Ethel V Mars naturally was disap ¬ pointed when Reaping Reward could do no better than finish third in the Kentucky Derby but she probably will have the pleasure Saturday of seeing her Milky Way Farm silks borne to victory in the Ken ¬ tucky Oaks whose history extends just as far back as the Derby and which is steeped in tradition as well Her principal hope for the Oaks is Mars Shield a daughter of Diavolo which won the Texas Derby in clever fashion in her previous start de ¬ feating among others Heelfly which tried out War Admiral at the end of threequar ¬ ters in the Derby Mars Shield was an eligi ¬ ble to the Preakness but trainer Robert McGarvey decided after watching the man ¬ ner in which War Admiral won the Derby that she would be better off meeting her own kind in the Oaks She is a true dis ¬ tance runner judging by the fashion in which she accounted for the Texas Derby
