BLACK RIVER IN FRONT Mrs Rose Sullivans Coiorbearer Scores at Aurora Defeats Bon Centime and Trans mutable in Sugar Grove Handi ¬ cap Sprints Predominate AURORA 111 May 12 Members of the sprint ranks displayed their wares in the majority of races on the program at the Fox Valley Jockey Clubs track where the Sugar Grove Handicap at a distance of six fur ¬ longs and presented as the sixth race of the afternoon served as the principal attraction attractionBlack Black River performing in the old rose and white colors of Mrs Rose Sullivan of Chicago ran the fastest six furlongs of the current session at the Aurora track to prove a handy winner over Miss G Killeens Bon Centime and Mrs M Rennillos Transmuta ¬ ble The fiveyearold bay gelding came from behind in the stretch to win by a length and a half and traversed the threequarters of a mile in 112 which however was con ¬ siderably slower than the track record recordThe The triumphant rush of Black River was a welltimed one by jockey Earl Porter who recently returned from Churchill Downs and signalized his return to the saddle here with a victory Unable to outrun the speedy Transmutable and Silverette in the early stages Porter bided his time with Black River until approaching the last quarter of a mile mileSILVERETTE SILVERETTE FALTERS FALTERSSilverette Silverette was the first to falter from the task of attempting to catch the fast but fainthearted Transmutable and Black River which worked his way up in steady fashion and got within striking distance of the leaders as the field swung around the home turn A furlong out Black River was only a head in the wake of the pacemaker and it became apparent that his effort would victoryAs be crowned with a victory As Mrs Sullivans colorbearer forged to the front Transmutable began to shorten his stride even more noticeably and Bon Centime made his bid for prominence Though straining every sinew Bon Centime could not seriously menace the son of Black Servant Rosesmith which rewarded his supporters with 1160 for each 200 invest ¬ ment mentThough Though clouds obscured the sun inter ¬ mittently and a stiff breeze was blowing throughout the day one of the most repre ¬ sentative midweek gatherings of the sea ¬ son was in attendance attendanceTHRILLING THRILLING SPORTS SPORTSOn On several occasions the spectators were treated to some thrilling and spectacular sport It was a speculatively inclined as ¬ semblage and it was predicted that the best weekday handle of the season would result resultThe The Diamond L Stables Bottom Row made it two straight victories at the meeting when the bay colt stood a hard drive in Continued on seventeenth page BLACK RIVER IN FRONT Continued from first page courageous fashion to gain a neck verdict over Burr Hickman the public choice in the four and a half furlongs sprint in which seven youngsters engaged A photograph was necessary to decide third place with Little Tramp accounting for that end of the purse purseE E B Thomas eightyearold gelding Sioux Chief took the measure of seven other sprint ¬ ers of the same ilk in the second event which was staged over the six furlongs route The veteran son of Cherokee Loyal Hannah crossed the winning line two and a half lengths in advance of Love Lost while The Darb landed third Alertly handled by Buddy Vail Sioux Chief assumed a com ¬ manding lead after traveling the first quar ¬ ter of the dash and appeared to have mat ¬ ters all his own way as they swung into the stretch Though Love Lost reduced the mar ¬ gin separating her from the leader during the final furlong the ultimate winner was never in danger of being overtaken overtakenVAIL VAIL ON DAILY DOUBLE DOUBLEBuddy Buddy Vail achieved the glory of pilot ¬ ing both ends of the Daily Double com ¬ bination as he came through with a spar ¬ kling bit of horsemanship to land Flashing Thru the victor in the third race by a head Cassada was second and Sun Monk ac ¬ counted for the show money Breaking from his position alongside the inner rail Flash ¬ ing Thru proved capable of outrunning his opponents for the entire jaunt but was ex ¬ tended to the limit during the stretch run in order to withstand the bid made by Cassada which had acted fractiously at the gate and broke from outside the stalls stallsDucmiss Ducmiss twin sister of the gelding Gold ¬ man scored in her initial appearance of the season in the fourth race easily capturing the six furlongs affair which was designed exclusively for threeyearolds Her margin at the conclusion was four lengths after having outraced her rivals from the break Old State finished second and Maxine B nosed out Proof for the third portion of the purse Jockey Joe Dyer had the fleet filly away to a good start and she immediately opened up a comfortable lead on her rivals increasing her advantage after heading for I the wire
