CHICAGO MAJOR RACING SEASON BEGINS MONDAY Everything in Readiness for Opening of Beautiful Washington Park Lakeside Handicap Chief Offering of Attractive Inau ¬ gural Program of Eight Races Woodlawn Purse Supplementary Feature HOMEWOOD 111 May 22 An attractive program has been ar ¬ ranged for the occasion and the major racing season in the Chicago area is expected to have an auspicious opening when the Washington Park Jockey Club inaugurates a meeting of thirty days here at the popular Washington Park course Monday afternoon While the program does not include a stake and will be overshadowed by many of the offerings during the five weeks here it will bring out several fields of the better class horses and if pleasant weather prevails the Monday inauguration may prove the best in several seasons As a whole the first days card of eight races is nicelv balanced Monday normally an offday pre ¬ cludes anything like a Saturday or holiday attendance but racing fans of greater Chicago have awaited the thereturn return of the thoroughbred with such enthu ¬ siasm that the Washington Park Jockey Club is certain to be called upon to entertain a large crowd Later as the meeting pro ¬ gresses and the principal racing attractions are decided the local course may find busi ¬ ness running far in advance of last year if the quickened throb of the sporting pulse is a true indication indicationLOCAL LOCAL OUTLOOK BRIGHT BRIGHTFor For the same reasons that Washington Park is preparing for its best session in sev ¬ eral years so are other of the four Chicago I major courses looking forward to bigger and better things this season the eleventh since parimutuel betting in connection with horse racing was approved by the state law makers Following the Washington Park meeting thirty days of sport beginning on June 28 will be staged at Arlington Park Lincoln Fields the next to open will inaugu ¬ rate a meeting of thirty days on August 2 and for twentyfour days beginning Septem ¬ ber 6 the thoroughbreds will be seen in ac ¬ tion at Hawthorne which meeting is to close the major season As a final end of six months of racing in northwestern Illinois and which opened at Aurora where the meeting closed today Sportsmans Park will operate twentyfour days starting Oc ¬ tober 4 4REVIVE REVIVE AMERICAN DERBY DERBYReviving Reviving the American Derby of 25000 added and introducing two new rich events in the Washington Park Futurity and the Princess Pat Stakes the Washington Park Jockey Club is attempting one of the most ambitious programs of the year In addi ¬ tion to the American Derby the Washington Park Futurity and the Princess Pat princi ¬ pal features include the Great Western Handicap the Blue and Gray Memorial the Chicago Handicap and the less than 1000 1000Quartered Quartered in the Washington Park barns as the major season starts are numerous fashionable racing establishments Among these are the stables of Warren Wright Calumet Farm M Woblf Woolford Farm John Marsch Joseph E Widener Mrs William H Furst Morris Vehori Mrs Emil Denemark and R C Thatcher ThatcherStanding Standing prominently are the stables of turf patrons residing in Chicago a number of those afore mentioned being residents of Americas second largest city and sports center With only a few exceptions every Chicago and Illinois establishment of promi ¬ nence will participate in the meeting meetingLAKESIDE LAKESIDE HANDICAP FIELD FIELDA A particularly attractive opening day card has been arranged and it will be featured by the 1500 Lakeside Handicap a mile con ¬ test for threeyearolds and over for which fourteen were named Mrs Emil Dene marks colors are to be carried by three while C E Davison and the Valdina Farms entered two each The Denemark represent ¬ atives which are expected to rule among the choices are Finance War Emblem and Chance Ray while Davisons two are Salaam and Navanod and the Valdina colorbearers Eagle Pass and Valted Among others named for the opening handicap are the Millsdale Stables Giant Killer Raoul Walshs Grand Manitou Mrs F M Grabners Spanish Babe and the Tran ¬ quillity Farms Wild Turkey TurkeyThe The principal supporting piece Monday will be the Woodlawn Purse a 1200 race for threeyearolds at a mile and seventy yards An allowance affair it drew a field of seven including Burning Star Come to Taw Alkit JUNE 19 19The The revival running of the American Derby which had its inception back in 1884 and has been won by many notable racers is set for Saturday June 19 Expected to attract the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner War Admiral and his most per ¬ sistent challenger Pompoon as well as others of less importance the race may com ¬ pare with the finest in the history of the old event eventAnother Another redletter day will be Saturday June 26 the final day of the meeting when the 15000 added Futurity will be run for the first time Nominations for this stake which closed last fall indicate that the re ¬ sult of the race will have a strong bearing on the juvenile championship of the year The Princess Pat exclusively for twoyear old fillies with 7500 added and also closed last fall will have its introduction as the principal attraction on Saturday June 12 while other stake dates include Saturday May 29 when the Chicago Handicap and Prairie State Stakes are programmed Mon ¬ day May 31 when
