The Porter and Caledonia was Marshall Fields Charing Cross and Mrs Julia M Lofts Mosawtre saved third from C V Whitneys Black Look LookEach Each one of these is an eligible for the Belmont Stakes to be run June 5 but in that greatest of all the threeyearold races there will be both War Admiral and Pom poon in the field and there was nothing in the Withers that appeared to have a serious chance with either of those sterling colts coltsSeldom Seldom has there been a greater crowd at the big Nassau County course The weather was ideal and the track at its best bestThe The Withers indicated that Melodist is not the colt he was when he was winner of the Wood Memorial and Billionaire which car ¬ ried the E R Bradley silks was a real dis ¬ appointment Charing Cross carried his speed well for the mile though he is not capable of beating a firstclass colt over that distance distanceLITTLE LITTLE DELAY AT POST POSTWith With little delay at the post the start was good and Charing Cross at once took com ¬ mand Billionaire did not last long in front and as he tired both Flying Scot and Black Look moved up Both were racing steadily and going to the stretch turn were so close after Charing Cross that it seemed certain both would run him down downTurning Turning into the stretch while Charing Cross was still holding his lead Gilbert per ¬ mitted Flying Scott to go to him As Work ¬ man attempted to make a live move with Black Look the Whitney colt tired and then Mosawtre began to gain ground groundFlying Flying Scot had no trouble putting Char ¬ ing Cross away and right at the end he was being eased up by Gilbert indicating he could have won by a greater margin The final duel took the leading pair out four lengths before Mosawtre which had run down Black Look in the final furlong to beat him for third by a length Melodist was far back all through the running and Billion Continued on thirteenth page FLYING SCOT TRIUMPHS Continued from first page aire quit so badly he and the only other to finish finishA A stunning surprise took place in this when Thomas Hithcocks Rioter the fa ¬ vorite came down at the second fence and Galsac stumbled over him to be eliminated Rioter won six of his eight races of last season only finishing second to Bushranger when he was beaten He was winner of the International Steeplechase Handicap his only start of this year and he had Chance Shot and Mr Theodore also had a snug hold of Rideaway and he galloped well within striking distance distanceEXCITING EXCITING CONTEST CONTESTWhen When the front field Liverpool was reached London Town was lapped on Good Chance and going to the lower end of the field the Clark fencer had taken command At the lower field jump London Town made a bad landing and Good Chance was with him again as the back field was reached They took three of the fences closely lapped and then Good Chance made a slight bobble three lengths from the finish and London Town drew out slightly slightlyAt At the upper end of the field Good Chance came again and it was a rare fight to the last fence where the winner drew out slightly Rideaway had failed when called upon but was still going steadily at the finish finishThis This renewal of the Appleton carried a net value of 2600 to the winner winnerAn An upset occured in the opening four and a half furlongs dash for maiden juvenile fil ¬ lies when
