NEWYORK STAKE UPSETS Perpetuate and Jungle King Unex ¬ pected Winners at Belmont Wood Son and Rioter Disappoint in inJuvenile Juvenile Stakes and Corinthian CorinthianSteeplechase Steeplechase Handicap NEW YORK N Y May 29 Robert L Gerrys Perpetuate a son of Infinite and Citrus took a place among the best two yearolds of the year when he was winner of the Juvenile Stakes at Belmont Park to ¬ day adding 5665 to his earnings At the end of the five furlongs he was doing his level best to score over Catalysis the filly that was winner of the Fashion Stakes for the Starmount Stable and one that had thorough seasoning in Florida racing Well back was Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Indian Lodge and Joseph E Wideners Transmitter was fourth while Wood Song the favorite and rated as probably the best thus far shown failed badly badlyAn An immense crowd was out for the big weekend of sport and conditions were ideal for racing but surprise winners came in both of the features when the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap saw Jungle King the winner and Rioter disappointing just as in the Juvenile Wood Song failed and Per ¬ petuate was winner winnerLONG LONG DELAY AT POST POSTThere There was a long delay at the post in the Juvenile caused by Easter Holiday and Showup Finally Cassidy sent both of them to a position outside the stalls and the seven engaged left in good alignment with Wood Song first from his stall and Trans ¬ mitter and Catalysis following closely while Indian Lodge beat Perpetuate away and the two bad actors brought up the rear rearEarly Early in the race Perpetuate joined Wood Song and they went along closely lapped down the middle of the course Indian Lodge was right behind and soon headed Wood Song while Catalysis was finishing with a rush along the inner rail under a vig ¬ orous ride by Steffen Wood Song when headed dropped back steadily and then In ¬ dian Lodge moved into second place but Perpetuate was holding his lead coming into j the final furlong For an instant Catalysis threatened to run past the son of Infinite She continued Continued on thirtyeighth page NEWYORK STAKE UPSETS UPSETSContinued Continued from first page to gain all the way home but was still a head short of catching him at the line RIOTER DISAPPOINTS DISAPPOINTSJungle Jungle King carried the silks of the Green tree Stable to victory in the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap over the favorite Thomas Hitchcocks Rioter and Saluda an ¬ other Hitchcock starter saved third from Bachelor Philip the only other to complete the course National Anthem when show ¬ ing the way to the small field unseated his rider Oxley at the fence at the lower end of the field Rioter such a dependable jumper all through the last season was ridden by the amateur J V H Davis in this and he did not jump with the boldness that marked his racing of last year He made a bad jump at the water and again five fences from the finish he stumbled badly badlyIn In the run home Davis went to a hard drive on Rioter but it was of no avail and Jungle King was winner by three lengths Rioter had saved the place by four lengths from Salada which easily outfinished Bach ¬ elor Philip PhilipOxley Oxley was unhurt by his fall from Na ¬ tional Anthem AnthemThis This running carried a value of 1710 to the winner winnerMOSAWTRE MOSAWTRE NARROWLY NARROWLYMrs Mrs Julia M Lofts Mosawtre under a magnificent ride by Eddie Arcaro earned a close decision over Fred Kahns Little Sleeper in the Broomstick Handicap but his victory was not confirmed until the stewards had considered a claim of foul lodged on behalf of the Wheatley Stables Melodist which had finished last of the four that performed third having gone to Siam from the Bomar Stable StableBoth Both Mosawtre and Melodist are eligibles for the Beimont but there was nothing in the victory of Mosawtre or the race run by Melodist that would suggest either one hav ¬ ing a reasonable chance in the mile and a half fixture fixtureThere There is no denying that Melodist was interfered with in the running but Longden who had the mount had attempted to go through on the inside when he was blocked and he invited disaster from the route he took tookA A disqualification marked the opening race when Ilchester after finishing third was set back for interfering with Flopsie in the stretch The race was won by Airs Val Cranes Elwawa with Narise second and after the disqualification Inactive was moved into third with Gold Cross into fourth place North Riding the High Time filly which races for the Howe Stable proved best of those of her age and sex which met in the fourth race She won all the way to score with something to spare over William Du Porit Jrs Roserina and Mrs Robert H jHeighes Lady Maryland saved third from l A 1 M Vl 31 W Aim
