Hera and There on the Turf Important Races on Weeks Calendar CalendarSuburban Suburban Belmont Top Offer ¬ ings ingsOlder Older Horses Featured at All Tracks TracksBelmont Belmont Steeplechase Stakes I Raised The new week in racing will be a very busy one what with starting off with a holi ¬ day and ending with a day whose sport will be featured by the Belmont Stakes Associ ¬ ations find on Decoration Day an oppor ¬ tunity to step up their programs and conse ¬ quently some attractive races are being of ¬ fered all over the country today Command ¬ ing the most attention naturally is the Suburban Handicap annual Memorial Day feature of the Westchester Racing Associ ¬ ation and one of the most historic events of its kind offered in this country A good field has been drawn for the mile and one quarter special to which is added the worth ¬ while sum of 10000 It will mark the first appearance under silks since his victory in the Santa Anita Handicap of Rosemont but William DuPonts fiveyearold has come up to the race in pleasing fashion and may be expected to go well under his top weight of 128 pounds poundsOlder Older horses will be featured at some of the other tracks with Washington Park staging the Blue and Gray Handicap at a mile and one furlong and Detroit the Col Alger Memorial Handicap each endowed with 5000 Suffolk Downs is offering a dash of six furlongs for threeyearolds for a similar purse but a good field has been recruited including candidates from New Continued on eteven HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page York Threeyearold fillies take the spot ¬ light Wednesday with the Coaching Club American Oaks at Beimont Park and the Priscilla Alden Stakes at the East Boston course The Oaks is one of the most im ¬ portant events of its kind in the country Run over the mile and three furlongs course not infrequently It is won by the champion of the division and such may be the case this season although the title will not be decided until Mars Shield has had her chance against the best in the East EastSaturday Saturday promises to be one of the busiest of the season with nine stakes scheduled by the leading tracks Onethird of these how ¬ ever will be offered by Beimont Park which will be closing its highly successful spring meeting Outstanding among Saturdays at ¬ tractions is the Beimont whose field will be headed by War Admiral Given fine weather Beimont Park should have one of the largest crowds in its history because the Beimont field will be headed by War Admiral which at the moment is command ¬ ing great interest among sports lovers not only because of his unblemished record for the season but for the brilliant manner in which he accomplishes his work His oppo ¬ sition in the Beimont will be moderate in numbers but that he may have a tough assignment is considered by some observers particularly those who are able to find ex ¬ cuses for Pompoons narrow defeat by the Man o War colt in the Preakness PreaknessBeimont Beimont Park is offering another good race on the flat Saturday in the National Stallion Stakes which will bring together most of the smart twoyearolds so far un ¬ covered in the East Unfortunately this dash of five furlongs will be run over the straight course and only the last quarter will be visible to the patrons It will be a great day for New York racing when Beimont Park goes modern and constructs a chute leading into the second turn for twoyear old races so that the action may be seen all the way Then an event like the Na ¬ tional Stallion Stakes will arouse the in ¬ terest among the public that its importance as a race deserves Richest of the other stakes to be decided Saturday are the Great Western Handicap at Washington Park over the mile and onequarter route and the six furlongs Quickstep Handicap at Latonia Each carries 5000 in added money Suffolk Downs will have a double feature with the Massasoit and John Hancock Handicaps the one at a mile and onesixteenth and the latter at threequarters Detroits stake is the St Glair for juveniles juvenilesRecognizing Recognizing the increased interest being shown in steeplechasing directors of the Westchester Racing Association have de ¬ cided to elevate the value of the fall stakes for jumpers with the Grand National being increased from 6000 to 10000 in added money For a period of five years the most noted of Americas steeplechases had at least 28000 for the winner but since 1931 its value has been only moderate Perhaps in time the Grand National once more may Be worth an amount sufficient to cause own ¬ ers of jumpers to stress greater importance in the development of good field horses Some of the jumpers imported from France last fall may be found in the Grand Na ¬ tional lineup with its greater value this autumn but this sport cannot come into its own until the steeplechase and hunts fac ¬ tions give each other more cooperation
