MENOW REGAINS SUPPORTERS Headley Derby Hope Will Meet Bull Lea Again Thursday. The Chief Out of Blue Grass Stakes, Keene-lands Thursday Headliner Redbreast on Scene. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 26. Hopes that Thursdays running of the Blue Grass Stakes, Keeneland closing feature, would prove an interesting four cornered battle, were dashed today when Earl Sande, trainer for Maxwell Howard, changed his mind and failed to send over The Chief from Churchill Downs. With the National Stallion Stakes winner out of the mile and one furlong race, the principal candidates are Warren Wrights Bull Lea, Hal Price Headleys Menow and Greentree Stables Redbreast. Due to his record-breaking victory last week in which he defeated Birthday and Menow, Bull Lea will rule a short priced favorite, but the Headley colt regained some of his following by the impressiveness of his workout here yesterday morning when he negotiated the Blue Grass distance of. a mile and a furlong in 1:55 after being under strong restraint for six furlongs. MENOWS COMPANION. Dah He accompanied Menow in that workout and also will carry the Headley silks in the Blue Grass, but the Belmont Futurity winner was plainly the better of the two. Owner Headley and trainer Duval A. Head-ley today were more confident over the chances of Menow than they have been since the colts disappointing performance. Redbreast, which arrived at noon yesterday from New York, was on the track for the first time this morning, but was permitted only a leisurely gallop. He showed no ill effects from his train ride. John Gaver, the Greentree Stable trainer, stated officially that Porter Roberts, who is doing the local riding for the establishment, would be up on Redbreast while Eddie Arcaro remained in New York. Only other possible starter in the Blue Irass is Kings Heir, but the Dixiana colt j-erformed in a six furlongs sprint this afternoon and unless trainer Clyde Van Dusen decides tomorrow that the effort qualified him, hi will not contest Thursdays stake.
