HITCHCOCK COLORS ONETWO Annibal and Rioter Triumph With Them in Chevy Chase Steeplechase AVedncsdcys Feature at Laurel Produces a aThrilling Thrilling and Exciting Battle BattleThrough Through the Field LAUREL Md Oct 10 Thomas Hitch ¬ cocks Annibal and Rioter two of the best jumpers in that establishment finished first and second in the twentysixth renewal of the 5000 added Chevy Chase Steeplechase Handicap a gruelling gallop of about two and onehalf miles which served as the prin ¬ cipal attraction on the midweek program of the Maryland State Fair Inc at Laurel Park today Listed fourth on the program only two others racing in different interests opposed the Hitchcock pair which ruled top heavy favorite and it saw Good Chance from the Rokeby Stable winner of the Gov ¬ ernor Ogle Steeplechase here in his last out Ing easily taking the measure of Game Run ¬ ner the only other starter which performed for Mrs F A Gould GouldThe The field was the smallest ever to contest this valuable old Maryland prize and while It lacked quantity the running produced a thrilling contest with the three leaders as principals when they came to the last fence in close orderbut separated at the finish with Annibal ivinner by a length and onequarter over his stablemate wtiich beat Good Chance by two lengths Game Runner after racing close up for two miles was outdistanced as he brought up the rear The score of Anni ¬ bal enriched the Hitchcock coffers to the extent of 4475 while Rioter earned an addi ¬ tional 1000 for finishing second secondAWAY AWAY TO PERFECT START STARTIn In the twentysixth running of the Chevy Chase Steeplechase Handicap the four start ¬ ers were sent on their journey without any delay at the starting point which was on the far side of the track and Rioter with a shift in riders from the amateur Rigan Mc Kinney to J Mason shot out into the lead to open up three lengths at the first fence For two miles the sixyearold gelding en ¬ joyed that margin and J Mason had the gelding going smoothly as he took his fences in smart fashion while Good Chance led Game Runner and Annibal who were in close attendance Rioter was setting a stiff pace with the improvement that came over his recent dull performance and he was still in front when reaching the fourteenth jump which was the final obstacle on the far side of the track but still two more to clear In the last half mile Good Chance made a resolute bid to run down Rioter curving for home but Annibal drove through on the inside and with a bold rush engaged the leaders coming to the final fence and was over the line safely outrunning his rivals on the flat The time for the distance was clearedOnce 436 and sixteen jumps were cleared Once again conditions were ideal for the sport and warm weather made the after ¬ noon pleasant for the entertainment for the biggest gathering of the present week weekThe The W L Brann Stable earned another victory at the present meeting when Savage Beauty runnerup to Seabiscuit in the Havre de Grace Handicap made her first appearance since that race to turn in a frontrunning and popular success in the fifth race This was the best race on the flat and it attracted six members of class A grade at a mile and onesixteenth and under handicap conditions It found Mr Canron from the W V Vaughan barn narrowly missing the premier share of the spoils when he finished inches back of the lightly weighted Challenger IL filly as the field of six reached the finish Third went to Rex Flag with Hypocrite a stablemate fourth
