Here and There on the Turf Umpire Is New Racing Title Spencers Job May Be Empty EmptyOne One Everything Ready Even the theWeather Weather War Admiral May Be 1 to 2 Jervis Spencer chairman of the Maryland State Racing Commission has been named umpire for the SeabiscuitWar Admiral match race to be held Tuesday at Pimlico The need of an umpire in racing is some ¬ thing new because the sport generally speaking is conducted under the supervision of stewards judges patrol judges assistants to the stewards directors of racing and whatnot but Charles S Howard and Samuel D Riddle have brought in a new official The use of an umpire for the Seabiscuit War Admiral race doesnt mean the begin ¬ ning of a new position and title in racings officialdom however and very likely noth ¬ ing more will be heard about an umpire after Tuesday TuesdayConsidering Considering the way the sun has been ehining down Maryland way these past few days the chances appear likely that the of ¬ fice of umpire of the SeabiscuitWar Ad ¬ miral match will be so easily performed by Spencer that little will be said about the job that day It seems that Seabiscuit and War Admiral dont like off tracks or rather their owners do not wish to race them in muddy going so part of the agreement covering Tuesdays race provides that an umpire be appointed to determine if the Pimlico track is acceptable to both horses at 830 oclock the morning of the event Should the course be approved at that time and a de ¬ luge occur a minute later the two horses are to go postward at the scheduled moment re ¬ gardless of what Howard and Riddle may think about the situation situationNow Now that the race between these horses is eo close at hand and both of them appear fit and ready it is the earnest hope nothing will occur to stop or even force a postpone ¬ ment of the match The public has been waiting for more than a year for this clash between Seabiscuit and War Admiral and Continued on seventeenth page HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page Its appetite has been whetted three times al ¬ ready If the race goes off as scheduled it will serve two purposes the first and most important of which being to determine which is the better horse The second will be to lessen the amount of publicity given both horses as so many persons even though they are anxious that the two stars settle the matter of supremacy are quite ready to talk and read about other thorough ¬ breds and matters of racing So let the Maryland sun shine for another five days and Seabiscuit and War Admiral keep their health healthAlthough Although Interest in the forthcoming special is Immense the vast majority of horsemen and experts arc inclined to the be ¬ lief that War Admiral will be the winner Many of his partisans even are very sure the son of Man o War and Brushup by Sweep will never leave the issue in doubt from the first pole to the last That being the case War Admiral is likely to rule a shortpriced favorite perhaps as low as 1 to 2 If such is the case the odds on Sea biscuit will be in the neighborhood of 3 to 2 Nearly everyone believes the Howard horse will have War Admiral to catch as the latter is a natural front runner and Seabiscnit has run his best races by coming from behind With nothing to run with him early War Admiral therefore is considered to have a distinct edge edgeJust Just what will be the strategy of the Howard forces and how well they will be carried out by Seabiscuit and jockey George Woolf to offset this conceded advantage of War Admirals remains to be seen Kiddle asked for and was granted tne concession of a walkup start which ordinarily may be expected to give the mighty atom a greater edge But Howard and trainer Tom Smith seem sure of their horse or they might not have been so quick in agreeing to a start of this kind They must be confident that Sea biscuit can break as quickly as War Admiral and settle into his stride as readily because the Hard Tack veteran cannot afford to spot his adversary two or three lengths at the very beginning They must be certain Sea biscuit can go with War Admiral from the very beginning or why would they be so confident of victory
