JACOLA AND VOLITANT Triumphant in Washington Handicap and Spalding Lowe Jenkins Stakes I First Mentioned Race Marred by a Fatal Accident to Filly Idle Miss Jockey Robinson Escaping Injury LAUREL Md Oct 29 Jacola and Voli tant the favorites won the twentyfifth and eleventh runnings respectively of the Wash ¬ ington Handicap and Spalding Lowe Jen ¬ kins Stakes here this afternoon over a heavy track As murky weather prevailed the crowd was held to about 12000 persons for the finale of the Maryland State Fairs an ¬ nual twentyfiveday meeting Jacola sport ¬ ing the silks of Edward Friendly kept her Laurel record untarnished as she defeated eight other good older horses and enlarged her earnings by 15650 while Volitant won 5950 for the Saratoga Stable of George H Bull and John A Morris MorrisThe The running of the 15000 added Wash ¬ ington over the exacting mile and onequar ¬ ter route was marred by a fatal accident to Idle Miss whose left hind leg snapped off just below the hock as she went into the clubhouse turn in close attendance of the leaders Alfred Robertson fortunately fell clear when she went down and was not in ¬ jured juredBY BY LENGTH MARGIN MARGINJacola Jacola captured the Washington by a length over Mrs E Graham Lewis Great Union which finished ten lengths before Mrs Emil Denemarks Two Bob Aneroid was fourth with the highly regarded Esposa landing in fifth position Carrying scale weight of 117 pounds and under the faultless guidance of Maurice Peters the threeyear old daughter of Jacopo and LaFrance whose previous victories here included the Mary ¬ land Handicap Laurel and Sellma Stakes ran the distance in the comparatively good time of 206 206In In the Jenkins In which he was 3 to 5 I Continued on tirentyseventh page JACOLA AND VOLITANT Continued from first page Volitant had all he could to do defeat R G Thatchers Tin Devil by half a length while D J Sullivans Good Odds finished another six lengths back while Time Sheet was fourth fourthThe The Washington was practically a two horse affair all the way Great Union being hustled to the front right after the start while Jacola swung in behind him under a strong pull Esposa Idle Miss and Aneroid also were close up as the field went Into the clubhouse turn but upon reaching the back stretch Great Union and Jacola drew away from the others othersTERRIFIC TERRIFIC STRUGGLE STRUGGLEPeters Peters waited until leaving the back stretch before calling on Jacola and she moved to Great Union readily but the latter also had been well rated and gave the filly a terrific struggle until the final sixteenth where the Friendly miss drew away Their battle had carried them far ahead of the others of which Two Bob moved up on the second turn as Esposa weakened badly and Aneroid continued evenly evenlyThe The fractional time was 23 47 113 140 and 206 Jacolas score was her fifth in six starts her only defeat having been administered by Idle Miss in the Ladies Handicap and increased her seasons earn ¬ ings to 32575 Last year she collected 31715 31715Harry Harry Richards masterly and powerful riding had much to do with the triumph of Volitant in the Jenkins as the colt appeared anything but a shortpriced favorite as Tin Devil challenged him in determined fashion in the run through the stretch Richards kept the son of Display and Flighty Ann at his task in courageous fashion as he held the Thatcher colt at his saddle girth Good Odds finished six lengths away and well be ¬ fore Time Sheet and the others othersVOLITANT VOLITANT BRISKLY RIDDEN RIDDENBreaking Breaking on top from his rail position Volitant was briskly ridden so as to be able to get off the rail going into the first turn Good Odds and Tin Devil being placed on the inside of him In the run down the back stretch Richards had Volitant in steadying restraint while running head and head with Good Odds while Tin Devil was eased back off the pace paceHalf Half way around the second turn Rich ¬ ards was compelled to rouse Volitant to shake off Good Odds and at that time Tin Devil was given his head and began moving up in outside Soon after the field straight ¬ ened out for the stretch run the Thatcher colt was well flanked on Volitant which caused Richards to rouse his mount sharply with the whip Under this urging the favo ¬ rite held Tin Devil safe while Good Odds held third place as none of the others wejre able to advance after having been outrun from the beginning beginningVolitant Volitant ran the mile in 1424 to make the Jenkins his fourth victory in five starts his only defeat occurring in the Junior Cham ¬ pion in which he finished at El Chicos heels His only previous feature victory was in the Saratoga Sales Stakes
