OPENING DAY AT DOWNS Enthusiastic Crowd Sees Lightspur Score in CoFeature Marsch Youngster Favorite at Almost AlmostOne One to Three Bad Accident AccidentOccurs Occurs in Sixth Race LOUISVILLE Ky Oct 29 With a large I and enthusiastic crowd taking advantage of Indian summer weather to view a very att its fall meeting of seven days this afternoon Several sparkling races were offered the big gathering and the one to attract most attention was the Kentucky Hotel Purse for twoyearolds This brought together seven juveniles five of which are candidates for the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes to be renewed as the feature next Saturday and it resulted in a very popular score when John Marschs Lightspur was an easy win ¬ ner Setting his own pace and held at the prohibitive odds of 1 to 3 the wellmade son of Blue Larkspur reached the end of the dash two lengths before Junius Bells Steel Heels Scotch Trap and Miss Sarah non cllgiblcs to the chief event of the fall season were third and fourth and then followed Star Boarder Stockboard and Range Dust I It was a splendid run for Lightspur and I boosted his stock for his stakes engagement Well handled by Kenneth McCombs who Continued on twentyseventh pagej OPENING DAY AT DOWNS Continued from first page previously had won on Sweep Through the winner ran the distance over the fast but dead track in the fine time of 112K 112KMcCombs McCombs had Lightspur in the van at the start with Range Dust in second place and Steel Heels showing the way to the others Lightspur rapidly established a clear lead and after the first quarter increased it to two lengths This advantage he maintained to the end After reaching the stretch Range Dust dropped back in favor of Steel Heels and although the latter was unable to men ¬ ace the speedy leader he was much the best of the others othersCHEROVAN CHEROVAN BEST BESTCherovan Cherovan carrying the Louisvilleowned Shadybrook Farm colors of Theodore E Mueller furnished a surprise in winning the third race fashioned for better grade platers and at six furlongs Mothers Love was three quarters of a length back of the winner and a length before Ginocchlo which beat the tiring Little Empress by half a length for minor honors honorsChalking Chalking up her first victory since mid ¬ summer Miss Bulldog was an easy winner of the Alta Vista Handicap sixth event Last Message a wellbacked choice was two and a half lengths back of the winner and Opera Star the second choice third thirdMiss Miss Bulldog ran the six furlongs with Robert Montgomery rushing the daughter of Bull Dog to the front Drawing clear after a quarter mile the winner steadily increased her advantage to be in hand at the end endA A cpill in which CoSport the favorite and Jeffersontown were Involved marred the fifth race and second of the best races Diavolo Boy was the winner with Little Nymph second and the Whale third Co Sport fell when in close quarters approach ¬ ing the stretch and Jeffersontown fell over him Kenneth McCombs was unconscious when rushed from the track and after a preliminary examination was taken to a local hospital Janice and Neighbor dominated the pace to the stretch where Diavolo Boy drove to the front and steadily increasing his ad ¬ vantage reached the final three and a half lengths before Little Nymph The Whale moved into second place shortly after reach ¬ ing the stretch but tired in the last stages CoSport was enjoying a prominent position when the mishap occurred occurredEight Eight horses the property of the Snow Flake Stable in charge of P J Van arrived from River Downs
